Keurig K45 Elite Brewing System Review

When I looked over the Keurig K45 Elite Brewing System it reminded me of the times I've longed for a mid-range coffee maker that also makes tea, hot chocolate, and cold drinks, and in a range of cup sizes to suit my mood and appetite.

I later decided I was asking too much. But now along comes the Keurig K45 Elite which, if we are to believe Keurig, does all this and more.

Note: Sadly. the Keurig K45 has been discontinued. You may still be able to purchase it, but new K45s are now rare. Used K45s are available, which is why this review has been left in place. The K45 has been replaced by the Keurig K55. Please click here to read our review of the K55.

Currently priced at under $100 (excluding shipping) on Amazon, this product gives you auto off and a generous 48-ounce removable water reservoir. So you can tank up for a full day's coffee supply (if there's no more than a couple of you) and keep it on all day for almost instant coffee at any time. And if you have to go out the machine will switch itself off automatically after a couple of hours.

But the crucial question is - does it give you great tasting coffee? And without making too much mess? Er, if that's not asking too much!

Please . . .

Some Info About Keurig

Keurig have been named the coffee maker "Brand of the Year" for 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 by the Harris Poll EquiTrend® Equity Study. Their products are used by such names as Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. Their coffee makers are sold under license by Cuisinart, Breville and Mr Coffee.

Famous for their K-cup packs, they make a wide range of coffee brewers for both the commercial and the domestic market. They've done this since 1990. And they don't just assemble parts made elsewhere - they make their own. From the electronic control panels to the filters to the alternative to K-cups - the Vue packs.

Great credentials, but how does their K45 Elite actually measure up?

Value for Money

The Keurig K45 isn't cheap.  But when you consider what it does for you then you wouldn't expect it to be. It's capable of producing a wide variety of hot and cold drinks of an astonishingly high quality, and in as little as 30 seconds when the power is on.

At a lower price than some of the most expensive coffee makers on the market, the Keurig K45 Elite is capable of producing a wide variety of hot and cold drinks of an astonishingly high quality, and in as little as 30 seconds when the power is on.

It weighs only 12-pounds when empty, uses only 1500 watts, and has an extremely easy to operate control panel. Nonetheless, this little machine manages to satisfy the often very demanding requirements of nearly all who use it.

Economic and Adaptable

Pressing the auto off button ensures that it switches off if idle for two hours, saving on the power bill. Unfortunately, you can't vary the two-hour period, but then not many users seem to mind that. Hey, at least it has this feature, which not all coffee makers in this price range do.

And you have three cup sizes - 6-oz, 8-oz, and 10-oz - so take your pick. This covers the coffee needs of nearly everyone. If you're going on the road you can put a travel mug in there by just removing the drip tray.

Clean Easy

Talking of removing the drip tray, Keurig made this easy to make cleaning less of a chore. That's about the only thing, apart from the filters, that actually needs cleaning with the K45. If you use the K-cup packs then they're individually sealed and there's seldom much mess to clean up afterward.

Consumer Ratings for the Keurig K45

The Keurig K45 scores an average of well over 4 out of 5 in over 2,840 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing, and over 4 stars out of 5 in over 300 reviews on the Keurig website. That can't be bad.

Most reviewers like the fact that it is fast, durable, and easy to operate. Style, versatility, and just simply good coffee feature strongly as well. On the odd occasion when the product has fallen short of Keurig standards, the company have replaced it without question.

As with almost any product, there are some reviewers who failed to be impressed. They have cited fragility, the length of time to brew, and poor value for money.

The fragility issue has been answered in one or two responses to the reviews, by users pointing out that the lid is not meant to be washed in a dishwasher as the high temperature of the water can cause damage.

Keurig itself has had to place a notice on their site to remind users that a small, domestic coffee maker like this is not suitable for heavy use in an office. So when reading negative reviews, bear in mind that some people will unintentionally place quite intolerable strains on a machine intended for domestic use, and then post an unfavorable review when the inevitable happens.
