How Exactly Does This AC-Free Coffee Maker Work?
The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is designed to be heated on a Coleman two- or three-burner camping stove. In fact, most camp stove burners are suitable, provided the heat produced isn't excessive. (That's where some campers have slipped up, and we talk about that below.)
If you forget about the power supply for a moment, you can consider this product as a normal drip coffee maker. It has a solid steel base, where the flame heats the water container, a filter basket that swings out, and a decanter that doesn't drip. It uses a standard basket type paper filter, though it can take a permanent filter if you prefer.
You can fill the water reservoir with enough water to make ten 6-oz cups. A full tank takes little more than 10 minutes to brew depending on ambient temperature. When the water boils it moves through the filter and into the glass decanter.
If you just have to pour your cup before the entire pot has brewed then you can utilize the Pause ‘N Serve facility. This lets you interrupt the brewing process while you pour off your cup - with no mess.
So you have all the home comforts of your regular drip coffee maker. You know - the one that you have at home plugged into an electrical socket. And it's right there with you in the middle of nowhere.
How Is The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker For Build Quality
As any camper knows, it can be pretty scary when you're facing nature with little more than what you've got in the back of your SUV. So the things you rely on have to be, well, reliable. And they can't be allowed to break easily.
So it may be a little disconcerting, setting up camp, to read the label on the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker box. It says, "Made in China".
But hold on. The Chinese may have been a little lax on quality control in the past, but times are a-changing. Certainly, companies such as Coleman that have a reputation for high quality don't compromise it when they manufacture in China. They've actually been instrumental in raising standards in Chinese factories. And the decanter, as a matter of interest, is made in Germany.
Handling this coffee maker gives a feel of rugged dependability. It's true there are some plastic parts to it. But all the parts that are liable to feel the burner flame are of steel.
What's So Special About The Coleman?
The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker looks different from your archetypal coffee maker. And it's not just because it doesn't have a power cord hanging out of the back. It's probably because Coleman isn't usually associated with coffee makers. The company makes all kinds of camping and other equipment designed to make the outdoor life easier.
That really is what's so special about the Coleman. It's easy to use, even outdoors without all the facilities that we take for granted at home. Its ability to remove all the grounds from your coffee ensures superiority over a percolator, once the favorite of campers.
Is The Coffee Any Good?
You might think that a coffee maker made for camping would be primitive and incapable of producing delicious coffee. Not so. The method used ensures that the brew is done well, with no grounds escaping the filter. And you don't have to be an expert on how to make good coffee.
The coffee from the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is widely regarded by most of its reviewers on Amazon as excellent. There are one or two things you have to be careful of, though, as outlined below.

At the present time (February 2019) nearly two-thirds of all reviewers of this product on Amazon award the full five stars. With nearly 700 reviews of it, that's a considerable achievement. Most users quite obviously love it.
Many reviewers have mentioned a specific problem they've had with the Coleman, that of overflowing. There are one or two rules you have to comply with to prevent this.
First, you should make sure your Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is level. In camping conditions on rough terrain, this may not be easy, but it's important.
Secondly, you have to insert your coffee grinds into the basket and swing it closed before you put the coffee pot in place. The pot should be pushed fully into place, with the handle precisely centered. It has to activate the lever that regulates the drip and the Pause 'N' Serve functions.
Make sure the lever is up to the max (which it can't be if the swing basket is still open). Also, you have to remove the little plastic stopper in the bottom of the grounds holder. All this becomes second nature after a couple of brews and ensures a trouble-free brew every time.
The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is a hit with nearly all its users. It does have a few idiosyncrasies but once you've mastered the art of using it you're good to go.
If you love camping and coffee without the grinds in the cup then the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is for you.
