The Bodum Bistro Burr Grinder - Getting The Exact Grinds That You Want

Whether you prefer your grinds fine for espressos or coarse for French presses, the Bodum Bistro has you covered. Once you know the amount of time needed to produce the grind you want then you can set the timer and leave the machine to do the rest.

There are over fourteen grind settings, which are continually adjustable, so you can experiment until you find the exact setting that's right for you. And the Bistro has one other feature that sets it apart from other coffee grinders, and that relates to the glass receiver pot into which the ground beans fall.

Bodum claims it solves the problem of static electricity in the pot. Static can cause the grounds to "jump" and attach themselves to any object before being placed in the coffee pot. This can reduce the amount of grinds used and affect the taste and strength of your brew.

Towards a Fuller Flavor

The solution? A borosilicate glass catcher for the grinds to fall into. This greatly reduces the amount of static liable to affect them. The net result is better-tasting coffee. Some kinds of oily bean may still produce more static than even the Bistro can handle, and this can result in some of the grinds still clinging to the inside of the glass catcher, but this is quite rare and the amount is negligible, though a quick rinse afterward is in order.

The Bodum Bistro uses a burr grinder, which generates less heat than a blade grinder - heat that can cause a bitter taste to the coffee in other machines. By crushing, rather than slicing, the beans, a burr grinder preserves more of the flavor. All the grind parts are metal, not plastic, and this too means better-tasting coffee as well as a longer lasting grinder.

You'll find that you're using fewer beans for your pot of coffee and that the grind is much more even, giving a fuller flavor to your favorite drink.

Solidly Built and Good Looking

The borosilicate glass catcher and metal grind parts aren't the only signs of build quality here. The hopper is of thick, clear plastic, the outside of the grinder is rubberized in a variety of fun colors, and the two main buttons look smart in a strong contrasting color.

Because the Bistro is a small machine it can only handle a limited quantity of beans at one time. Nevertheless, you can comfortably grind enough for one or two mugs at a time, and then some more a few minutes later if needed.

Easy To Handle (And That Includes Cleaning)

The control buttons are large and highly visible, and to set how finely the beans are ground you simply twist the upper bean container. It's easy to grip the machine firmly when you're using or cleaning it.

You can easily remove the hopper and the grind container for rinsing under running water. You can also remove the upper burr and brush it clean. Turn the whole machine upside down and shake to remove any excess grinds from the lower burr. You should only need to do this about once a week.

Consumer Ratings for the Bodum Bistro Burr Grinder

The Bodum Bistro scores an average of over 3.5 stars on Amazon at the time of writing (May 2019), from nearly 2,700 reviewers. Over two-thirds give 4 or 5 stars. Overall satisfaction with it is high, with the main plus points being value for money, efficiency, and ease of use.

Some users don't like the 5-minute wait that's recommended between 20-second grinds, but that's down to the laws of physics with a compact grinder like this, so there's not much that can be done there. And sometimes the use of oily beans causes some mess in the glass jar, which necessitates rinsing it out before the next grind.

Click this link to read our take on coffee maker reviews (opens in new tab).

But if you're happy with those limitations then you'll probably agree with most reviewers that this machine is an extremely efficient, easy to use, and economical burr grinder.

Summary

The Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder may have a small footprint but it has a big heart. Its solid construction, especially of the burr grinder parts, means that it can take whatever punishment you may care to throw at it. If you're after great tasting coffee from superbly ground coffee beans (and who isn't?) then you'll love this coffee grinder.

Cuisinox Roma COF-10R Stainless Steel Stovetop Moka Espresso Maker Review

The Cuisinox Roma Stainless Steel Stovetop Moka Espresso Maker is your kind of coffee maker if you want a machine that doesn't make you pay for what you already have, yet still produces great tasting espressos and looks fabulous sitting on your kitchen worktop.

It comes in three sizes - 10-Cup, 6-Cup, and 4-Cup. But one of the most noticeable features about it is that Cuisinox give it a full 25-year warranty. They obviously have full confidence in their product, so let's see if that confidence is justified.

With the Cuisinox Roma The Coffee Had Better Be Good . . .

When you're paying almost $100 or more for an espresso maker that doesn't have its own heating device, the coffee had better taste great. Well, if you want crema on your espresso and you're prepared to grind the beans very finely then you're in for a treat.

If you use a simple blade grinder and make the grinds powdery, but don't compact them too much, then you'll find that this espresso maker is set up to produce the perfect espresso for you.

If you leave the lid open and watch while it brews then you will see the crema form and cover the espresso. That's the time to take it off the heat because your espresso is done. If you leave it on too long it may taste a little burnt, though, of course, some people prefer it like that anyway. A little trial and error, and you'll know exactly how to use this machine.

About The Build Quality

Cuisinox have given a great deal of thought to the build quality of the Roma. It's not just that they have included an extra gasket and a reducer, so you can easily measure half-measures if you don't want a full pot. Nor that they've hand-crafted the entire unit to the highest industry standards.

It's not even the induction base, enabling you to use any heat source - electricity or gas - to heat the water, that attracts so much praise. Where Cuisinox have scored is that they've made the whole product from stainless steel, and not aluminum. Aluminum has attracted a lot of publicity lately on account of its adverse health effects (it releases harmful oxides when coming into contact with hot liquids).

Cuisinox have used heavy gauge 18/10 stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish. Even though it's made in China, Cuisinox are a Canadian company and are evidently capable of enforcing very high-quality control standards in their factories.

For example, unlike some other stovetop models, the Roma isn't prone to having its handle break off. Just feel it in your hands. It's solid and quite heavy. The two parts of the pot screw together tightly so as not to allow any steam to escape. It doesn't feel like anything ever could break. Perhaps Cuisinox knew what they were doing when they decided on that 25-year warranty.

Pleasing On The Eye - And On Your Kitchen Worktop

Cuisinox have a distinct style. They aim for beauty as well as practicality. The Roma, all stainless steel, is sleek and elegant, yet is still down to earth enough to include a screen filter that you place in the filter itself if you want to halve the amount of coffee you're brewing.

Espresso Easy

The Cuisinox Roma Stovetop Moka Espresso Maker is easy to use, once you've got used to it and know one or two things about it. As long as you have the right amounts of water and coffee grinds in place, and you don't over or undercook, then you'll get it right.

You can use it with electricity or gas. With gas, make sure the handle isn't placed directly over the flame, and keep the setting on medium to low for best results. Don't overfill the water reservoir either - the brass safety pressure-relief valve should be above the water line. If you obey these simple guidelines then you should have excellent results with the Roma.

Features and Specifications of the Cuisinox Roma:

  • Product Dimensions: 7 x 7 x 10 inches
  • Shipping Weight: 4 pounds
  • Item model number: COF-10R
  • Construction: Stainless steel
  • Induction base
  • Included: screen filter, one extra gasket, and reducer
  • Warranty: 25 years

Cleaning It Up

When it comes to cleaning, you should hand wash the Cuisinox Roma Stainless Steel Stovetop, rather than just put it in the dishwasher. But it is very easy to clean. It doesn't make very much mess to start with.

Cleaning is easier if you unscrew the two sections of the pot after pouring your coffee, and let them cool, rather than place them straight into cold water. This prolongs the life of the gasket apart from anything else.

Wipe any excess coffee grounds from around the grounds basket lip (where it makes contact with the gasket) so the seal doesn't leak. And every so often, make a "brew" with a tablespoon of baking soda. That will clean up the internal parts and keep it producing great tasting espressos.

Pros and Cons of the Cuisinox Roma

Pros:

  • Stainless steel construction - no aluminum
  • Can be used with gas or electricity
  • Good looks
  • Easy to clean
  • Makes great tasting coffee

Cons:

  • No marking on water container for one serving, as against two
  • Requires coffee correctly ground to extreme fineness for best results

Consumer Ratings

Over 350 customers give this product an average rating of well over 4 stars out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing (May 2019). The superior tasting espressos that it produces, and the fact that it's not made of aluminum figure prominently in the reviews. Its good looks and sturdy durability also go down well.

Some have commented that the inside of the top chamber is hard to clean and wipe dry. Others have not noticed this. In any event, if you clean with the baking soda method you can just leave the parts to drain overnight.

Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker Review

For a price of less than $70, the Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker delivers quite exceptional value. It's a Japanese product through and through, from the inception and design to the engineering, so how does it rate compared to the more well-established brands?

Mostly I'm going to call this product the Zutto, rather than repeat its full name every so often (sighs of relief all round!).

Features & SpecsPros and Cons
Consumer RatingsSummary

Power and Capacity

For such a compact coffee maker, the Zutto has all the power it needs to give you a great coffee experience. It brews piping hot coffee for 5 cups (as opposed to the traditional 4), thanks to its 650 watt motor, and its hot plate warms the carafe during brewing and then keeps the coffee hot.

One caveat here - most coffee makers tend to exaggerate the number of cups they can produce at one sitting, and Zojirushi are no exception. The Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto cups are measured at 5 ounces each - not exactly generous. Nonetheless, the reservoir capacity is 23 ounces, and you can get two decent mugs of coffee from one brew.

Simplicity and Speed of the Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker

The Zutto boasts a brew cycle of 3-5 minutes, though it's nearer 8 minutes if you wait until the last drip has fallen from the filter into what Zojirushi call the decanter (the carafe).

Few complain about the time this takes - not many coffee makers are quicker, and in any event you need enough time for the coffee grinds to release their flavor while the hot water filters through.

The Zutto's simple design helps here. It's quite unique in that the filter cone is inside the decanter, rather than just sitting on top of it. When you take the decanter to pour your coffee, you take the filter with it. So any late-arriving drips of coffee that arrive while you're pouring your coffee fall into the decanter and not onto the warming plate. Pretty cool.

There's nothing to program, no LCD displays, no bells and whistles. You just fill the reservoir with water, check the filter is in place, add your coffee grinds and press the one button on the device. Couldn't be simpler.

Click this link for some great tips on how to use a coffee maker so it makes delicious coffee.

What About Cleaning?

The downside of any coffee maker must include the cleaning. The combination of coffee grinds and hot water mean there's always plenty of grime and scale building up. But the Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto must be about the easiest coffee maker ever to clean.

For a start, the water reservoir can be easily removed either to fill from the faucet or to clean. I've already mentioned the filter cone being inside the decanter, so you just wash or rinse them both together.

You can keep your Zutto in top condition by simply flushing through with water before you first use it, and periodically throughout your ownership of it.

And Filters . . ?

Filters are to a certain extent a personal thing. Some always use paper filters, while others prefer the ease of permanent gold filters.

The Zutto holds a #2 paper cone filter, but you can use a gold filter as long as you hold the handle of the decanter naturally to prevent it slipping out as you pour. A simple perforated lid fits on top, making the whole thing easy to clean.

The charcoal filter, like the decanter, can be replaced easily. Charcoal, being a natural substance, will need replacing every so often anyway (two years, according to Zojirushi).

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Compact.
  • Easy to clean, especially as the filter cone sits inside the decanter.
  • Removable water reservoir.
  • Capacity is 5 cups of 5 oz - a more convenient size of brew.

Cons:

  • No auto shut-off, so you have to remember to switch it off when you've finished, or you could have a "burnt" taste to your next cup.

Consumer Ratings

The Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto gets an average of over 4 stars out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing (February 2019), from over 1,420 reviewers. Over 4 in every 5 reviewers give 4 or 5 stars. Most users love its design and compactness, as well as the fact that the Zutto makes great tasting coffee, including iced coffee.

The 5-cup capacity is also appreciated for the extra quantity of coffee brewed.

One or two reviewers have complained about poor tasting coffee, but they are a tiny minority. They may be among those who don't read the User Manual properly, particularly where it advises you to clean the machine occasionally to preserve the taste of the coffee.

It's also important to allow the brew cycle to complete fully before pouring, so you get the full flavor and also to prevent grinds getting in the cone, carafe and in your mug.

Summary

The Zutto is designed differently from almost any other coffee maker. It's compact, stylish and pleasing on the eye.

The Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker is also a breeze to clean and keep in top condition, leading some owners to still be using it every day 5 years after purchasing it - a very rare achievement among coffee makers. Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker is often used as a replacement for a worn-out Cuisinart DCC-1200. It's in the same price bracket and largely does the same things, but Cuisinart have added a couple of extra features.

First, it claims to be 25 per cent faster, thanks to Cuisinart's Extreme Brew technology, taking only about 5 minutes to brew.

Perhaps it is, though few reviewers seem concerned about the speed of it. What they seem to appreciate more is the improved taste. That's down to an improved filter design and the broader water dispensing area. And that in turn means this coffee maker can squeeze the last ounce of flavor out of the coffee.

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Has All the Best Features of the DCC-1200 - And More

Cuisinart have taken the DCC-1200 and built upon it to produce a machine with the same looks and almost the same dimensions. To a large extent it has the same component parts, as well. But it is faster and capable of producing better flavored coffee for the reasons that we'll see shortly.

The same permanent gold tone filter is used, but so that it has some space between it and the filter holder. This ensures a more even distribution of the water flow and a slightly faster overall brew process. If you prefer you can use paper filters, which catch more of the sediment that might otherwise end up in your coffee.

Cuisinart have used the same charcoal filter in the water reservoir, and you have to take a little care when inserting this. But it is important to have your water filtered properly. If you skimp on this it can spoil the taste of what would have been great coffee. Here are some useful tips on how to use a coffee maker to make the best tasting coffee.

Quality, Reliability ... and Taste!

Cuisinart have an impressive range of reliable coffee makers, all of which attract high average ratings on Amazon. So the quality that you get from this particular model should come as no surprise. The 24-hour programmer, the adjustable carafe temperature control, brew pause - these things all speak for themselves. As do a choice of the carafe or from one to four individual cups, and great tasting coffee.

Here's a quick video review by an American housewife:

Features and Specifications of the Cuisinart DCC-2650:

* Product Dimensions: 9.5 x 11 x 16.2 inches
* Weight: 9 pounds
* Shipping Weight: 9 pounds
* 12-cup carafe with ergonomic handle, dripless spout and knuckle guard
* Fully automatic with 24-hour programmability, self-clean, 1-4 cup setting and adjustable auto-shutoff (0-4 hours)
* Adjustable carafe temperature control with high, medium & low settings
* Brew Pause feature lets you enjoy a cup of coffee before brewing is completed

Pros and Cons

Pros: Speed; choice of gold tone or paper filters; charcoal water filter means improved taste; 24-hour programmer; temperature control; brew pause; brew up to 10 cups in one go.

Cons: Carafe hot plate can sometimes malfunction if not looked after and cleaned regularly.

Customer Ratings

Over 1,360 reviewers have awarded this coffee maker an average of nearly 4 out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing. Over seven out of every ten of them have given 4 or 5 star ratings. Many users particularly love how they can taste the full flavor of the coffee. And how they can control the strength of it. Being able to keep it hot in the carafe for up to 4 hours without burning is also appreciated.

Some people less happy cited the carafe hot plate ceasing to work properly or the coffee not being hot enough. However, the vast majority of users seem very happy with their DCC-2650. In any event, there is a 3-year warranty, something some of the negative reviewers were happy to take advantage of.

Another point worth remembering when reading the reviews is that all coffee makers need a little TLC at regular intervals. YouTube has some excellent videos showing how to clean a coffee maker. When a coffee maker gives out prematurely it can sometimes be on account of the lack of care given it during its lifetime.

Hamilton Beach 49983 2-Way FlexBrew Coffeemaker Review

The Hamilton Beach 49983 2-Way FlexBrew Coffeemaker is a comparatively recent addition to the Hamilton Beach range. It's an update of the 49980A model, which is still very popular, but it is restricted. Why? It isn't compatible with K-Cup packs.

That little omission is now fixed. With this model, you have complete freedom to brew either a single cup at one time or up to 12 cups in the carafe. You can choose regular or bold strength. And you use either a K-Cup Pack, a coffee pod (for the carafe only) or ground coffee.

The Hamilton Beach 49983 - Now Fully Versatile and Compatible With K-Cup Packs

If there was one drawback to the Hamilton Beach 49980A it was the lack of compatibility with K-Cup Packs. This is the issue that has now been resolved with the introduction of this model.

It's a very simple process. You have a tray for making individual coffee servings, and this has two inserts. One is for coffee grounds or pods and the other for K-Cup coffee packs.

The timer and the auto shut-off let you program ahead. So you can have your morning brew ready as soon as you awake. And there's no risk of wasting energy if you forget to switch it off.

Cleaning is very easy. Just use a damp cloth to wipe the heating pad on the carafe side. And use a paper towel to clean the filter area. The lid stays open at almost any angle, which is a great help. On the single-serve side, you can take the metal tray out for rinsing under the tap. That metal tray can be turned upside down to fill a short cup, or removed to fill a travel mug.

Hamilton Beach 49983

The Same Stylish Good Looks as the 49980A

The 49983 and its predecessor, the 49980A, look very similar. This newer model has a more stylish digital readout and control panel, but they essentially do the same job.

There's one major difference. The carafe and the mug placement holder are opposite ways round. And there is just the one filler lid for both carafe and mug instead of one for each. So if you often have guests pop in for coffee after you've prepared your coffee for the next morning, beware. The 49980A may be better for you (as long as you don't mind doing without K-Cups).

Pros and Cons of the Hamilton Beach 49983

Pros:

  • Flexibility - single brew or up to 12 cups;
  • Choose from coffee grounds or K-cups;
  • Regular or bold strength; easy to clean;
  • Fully programmable.

Cons:

Some have reported a smell of plastic, though this seems to be in a small minority of cases. Also, you need some space above the unit in order to operate it properly.

It's very popular with users who switch regularly between multi-brews and single brews, and who drink a lot of coffee but can't afford a K-Cup with every brew.

Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

About the first thing you notice about the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central is the control panel on the front. Displaying the time when not in use, it also shows other settings. These can be anything from the strength of brew to the number of cups ordered. Or when it's time to remove any calcification from the water reservoir.

Below that is the carafe, contained neatly inside the frame and enhanced with a stainless steel strip around the lower circumference and down the ergonomic handle that stays cool at all times.

This product from one of the leading names in coffee makers certainly looks good, but is it just looks alone?

Consumer RatingsSummary

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 Has A Deceptively Large Capacity

You wouldn't think so by looking at it, but the DCC-2600 can brew up to 14 cups in one go. To give you full control, there's a cup measure from two to fourteen cups on the side of the carafe. There's also a Water Level Indicator Window in the water reservoir. This makes it very easy to feed into it exactly the right amount of water.

But you don't have to brew in bulk. The settings allow for 1 to 4 cups to be selected if you so wish. And you don't have to sacrifice any taste or heat (which sometimes happens with other multi-cup coffee makers).

Quality Filters Equals Quality Taste

While the coffee itself produces the flavor, the water that comes out of your tap can ruin it. That's why the water filter is just as important as the coffee filter in a coffee maker.

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 uses a high-quality charcoal water filter to eliminate the chlorine and other undesirables found in any water supply and that would otherwise spoil the taste of your coffee.

But do make sure you renew the filter regularly. Charcoal does a great job, but it's unstable. It becomes clogged after a while with all the stuff that would otherwise get into your coffee.

Cuisinart recommend changing it every 60 days or 60 uses - more often if you have calcium-rich water in your area. People leaving two-star reviews because the taste deteriorated should check on this point.

The filter for the coffee itself is a permanent Gold Tone filter that doesn't need replacing - merely cleaning. You can, if you prefer, use paper filters instead, as this is largely a matter of taste. And of how you use a coffee maker.

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 has over 4 stars from over 880 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing (February 2019). Over two thirds give it a full 5 stars, which is an impressive rating for any product. The people who love it do so mainly because of the great taste of the coffee it produces. And that it's so convenient and easy to use, whether for a straightforward brew or for programming a brew in a few hours' time.

Some users have had problems with the carafe and lid. If any water dribbles down the outside of the glass it can enter your cup and spoil the taste.

But most users appear not to have those problems, or to have dealt with them without any fuss.

Summary

Cuisinart is an established brand of coffee maker, and this DCC-2600 model has been particularly successful. On reading the reviews it's evident that the manufacturers have taken on board feedback from earlier models and made improvements.

The result is a product that delivers great tasting coffee when required and in the right quantities. And that has an enviable reputation in its field. You can buy the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central with confidence that you'll almost certainly be pleased you did.

BUNN GRB Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer Review

The BUNN GRB Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer is almost identical to the BUNN BXW . The main difference appears to be that the BXW is available only for US residents, whereas the GRB can be shipped to selected countries overseas. Be that as it may, both coffee makers come from a company that is synonymous with coffee makers and that has an excellent reputation not only for producing high-quality merchandise but also for providing outstanding customer and after sales service.

Note: Although this model is still available on a limited basis, it has been replaced by the BUNN-O-MATIC. Read our review of the BUNN-O-MATIC by clicking this link (opens in a new tab).

The BUNN GRB Coffee Brewer - Great for Volume Use

Like so many coffee makers, this model works well when it is used how the manufacturers intended. Some products are meant for occasional use, and some for heavy use. This is for heavy use.

That means the warming plate that keeps the coffee in the carafe hot is on all the time. Indeed, it has to be. Likewise, the hot water tank is always keeping the water in the reservoir hot so you can produce a piping hot cup of joe within three minutes at any time the machine is on.

But if you only place a demand on it of three or four cups a day then you'll be paying to keep the water (and the coffee in the carafe) hot all day, which is unnecessary and expensive. The water in the tank may evaporate, and the coffee in the carafe become too hot, affecting the taste. If you think that's a danger for you, perhaps the BUNN MCU would be a better choice.

While BUNN themselves have marked this model for domestic use, it is ideal for serving an office full of people, as well as a large family, or in any environment where people are regularly helping themselves to a brew.

Probably the most distinguishing feature of the BUNN GRB coffee maker is the spray-head, which ensures the coffee grinds are evenly sprayed with water at the optimum temperature to bring out the best taste.

Pros and Cons of the BUNN GRB Coffee Brewer

Pros: Free and quick replacement if product is defective; instant hot coffee whenever you need it; spray-head ensures optimum flavor.

Cons: Expensive to run if used for only one or two people.

Customer Ratings

Scoring over 4 from over 1,620 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing (February 2019), the BUNN GRB has attracted the full 5 stars from the vast majority of its reviewers there. Most of the reviews have gushing praise.

What about the negative reviews? These tend to focus on part failures and the cost of keeping the reservoir water boiling hot and the carafe contents warm for periods when they're not required (but hey, this IS a 10 cup model, remember?).

Following the instructions to the letter when setting it up appears to be more important for the BUNN GRB than for most coffee makers, and this is something that some negative reviewers seem to have neglected.

In fairness, this model does seem more suited to heavy, regular use, rather than just one or two people wanting an occasional brew, so bear that in mind when making your buying decision.

The Hamilton Beach 49980A - Affordable and Low Maintenance

Currently at below $50.00, this product is one of the cheaper coffee makers. Yet it has many features normally found only on more expensive coffee makers. These include
* a hot plate to keep the coffee in the carafe hot that has auto shut-off after two hours, and
* the capability to program up to 24 hours ahead.

And it really is low maintenance. For example, the filter pulls out easily for emptying and washing under the tap. And having the option of making a single cup or a carafe is a definite plus. It means that if you only brew for one then you don't have a large coffee pot to clean afterwards.

Two Coffee Makers in One

Remarkably for such a low price, the Hamilton Beach 49980A gives you two completely separate ways of brewing your coffee. Or any other hot drink. The carafe makes up to 12 cups at a time. Ideal for office use, entertaining guests or catering for a large family. Plus the single serve setting, with its multilevel cup rest, sill suits those of us who drink our coffee alone. And they each have their own reservoirs (holding 60 and 14 oz respectively).

The Regular/Bold setting gives you further control over the strength of your brew.

Pros and Cons of the Hamilton Beach 49980A

Pros: Travel mug included; easily switch from carafe to single serve and back (with separate reservoirs); program up to 24 hours ahead; auto shut-off; accepts senseo pods and coffee grinds as well as K-Cups.

Cons: If you like your coffee strong you may need to use the Bold setting.

Here's an informative video review of this coffeemaker:

Customer Reviews and Scores

Over 4 stars from over 9,800 Amazon coffee maker reviews. That's the impressive score of the Hamilton Beach 49980A. Over 75 per cent of them are 5 or 4-star, at the time of writing.

What many people particularly like about this product is that it brews the Senseo pods. These are largely considered to be superior to the K-Cups in taste, as well as cheaper. Not only that, but it also accepts coffee grinds, making for even closer control over the taste of your brew.

Being able to choose the single brew option whenever you want, instead of potentially wasting coffee by brewing in the carafe, also goes down well.

Some reviewers have reported that this coffee maker produces weak coffee. However, it's unclear whether they took advantage of the Bold setting that strengthens the brew. If they were using their own coffee grinds then it may be that they weren't putting enough in the filter. More enquiries need to be made on that aspect. Overall, though, this coffee maker is a hit with its users.

Conclusion

The Hamilton Beach 49980A Two Way Brewer proves that you really can find a coffee maker not too expensive in price, with features on a par with much more expensive products, AND that has excellent reviews and a high overall score. To say nothing of its ability to serve up delicious coffee. Click on the Buy button below for more information.

Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System Review

keurig k130

The Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System (formerly known as the B130 and then the K130) is really intended for commercial use in a hotel (hence Keurig describing it as "In-Room"). So what's the difference between ordinary domestic use and hotel use? The end result in both instances is supposed to be a delicious cup of coffee or tea, is it not?

Note: Sadly, this product has now been discontinued. You may still be able to purchase it, though probably only as second-user, which is why this review has been left in place. Keurig have replaced it with the Keurig Mini K15 Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker.

Well, consider this. With a domestic machine, you want the freedom to choose your own brew. You might prefer coffee in the mornings and tea in the afternoons, or to vary the blend from one day to the next. And with domestic use usually meaning more than one person using it the variations are likely to be even more pronounced.

But people staying overnight in a hotel or boarding house are not so varied in their tastes and are unlikely to be carrying a sachet of their favorite brew with them. They prefer to choose from a selection in their hotel room. And, of course, they're not likely to drink more than one or two cups at a time.

So Keurig dispensed with unnecessary features and made this coffee maker so that it can be operated by anyone very easily just by selecting a K-Cup and pressing the bar to commence the brew. You don't even need to know how to use a coffee maker. And don't forget there are over 200 varieties of gourmet coffee, tea, cocoa and iced coffee to choose from, so there's something for everyone.

It does have only a single-use water reservoir, but then that's probably all you're likely to need when staying in a hotel or motel. The water is heated in the reservoir before being funneled into the K-Cup, where the actual brewing is done. Very simple.

So is this the coffee maker that you are looking for? Let's see.

The Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System Gives You Ease of Use Plus Speed

This product has to be very easy to use. Many of the people operating it will not have come across it before. And Keurig have made it just about as easy as it comes, with directions printed permanently on the machine itself.

Speed is another factor. Many people have to leave their hotel early in the morning to continue their journey, and they don't want to be delayed by a coffee maker. At under 3 minutes to brew a cup, they won't be delayed by the K-Cup In Room Brewing System.

Adaptable to the Needs of the Traveller

The Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System can brew any K-Cup brew or your own regular coffee grounds (which suits some of us and not others). All you need is a reusable filter. However, it has to be said that this unit works best with regular K-Cups.

Features and Specifications of the Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System:

  • UL & c-UL Listed: Commercial use only
  • Power: 700 Watts
  • Voltage: 110-120VAC
  • Weight: 7.2 lbs. empty
  • Shipping Weight: 7.65 pounds
  • Dimensions: 11.1"H x 10.0"D x 7.0"W

Pros and Cons

Pros: Instructions printed on the machine; speed - 3 minutes to a brew; can brew regular coffee grounds as well as K-Cups; low price; stylish looks; easy to store.
Cons: Single-use water reservoir.

Customer Reviews and Scores

This product scores around 4 stars out of 5 from over 2,950 reviews on Amazon.com at the time of writing (May 2019), with well over 50 per cent of scores being the maximum of 5. Among the criticisms raised were the limitation to one cup size, and the noise factor. But this coffee maker is a one cup size machine and described as such, so it's not really fair to post a low score for that - if you want more cup sizes you might consider the Keurig K45 or K65. And other reviewers say the noise is not very noticeable and is short-lived anyway.

Most people love the stylish good looks of this machine, its reliability and the way it can be stored away inconspicuously. Mainly the people who knew the limitations of this In Room Brewing System were satisfied with it. Some have had problems with Keurig's Customer Service because this coffee brewer is really a commercial product not meant for domestic use.

Keurig's website describes the product rather ambiguously as "specifically designed for hospitality" rather than coming out and saying it's for commercial use only, so it may be wise to check before you buy that there won't be any problems over the way you plan to use it.

Summary

If you're not buying the Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System for sporadic use by one individual at a time, as in a hotel, for instance, then it may be best to consider the Keurig K65 or K75 instead. Those models are more expensive, but then the main reason for this model's economy on price is that it doesn't need the features that domestic use demands.

However, if you do need it for commercial use then your choice of the Keurig K-Cup In Room Brewing System is a good one. That is, provided it is still available. Click the button below to find out.
