BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 Review

Its full name may be a mouthful - the "BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 Automatic Commercial Coffee Brewer with 3 Warmers". It has to be plumbed into the main water supply, and it's dual voltage adaptable. On top of that, it's in the $500 plus price bracket.

Sounds like a true heavy-duty, commercial brewer so far, right? So let's take a close look at the BUNN 38700.0009 DV-3 and see if it really satisfies the requirements of a crowded workplace or busy reception area. Especially when it comes to what we're all interested in - ease of use and exceptionally good tasting coffee.

What You Get For Your Money

What you're really buying with a coffee brewer like this is reliability and ease of use. You also want the peace of mind that comes from knowing the users of the brewer will have few complaints.

The BUNN 38700.0009 is not restricted to K-Cups or any similar capsules, unlike, for instance, the Keurig B3000SE. But, like the B3000SE, it is a true commercial brewer, plumbed into the main water supply.

It operates differently, though, having a water tank of 200 oz. (5.9 liters) capacity. This is because it decants the coffee into regular 64 oz. decanters or BUNN 1GPR one gallon coffee servers. Brewing at up to 7.5 gallons per hour it's not surprizing that there are three decanter warmers built into it.

For which you need, of course, three decanters, so it's a pity that you have to purchase them separately. But on the other hand the price of them is less than $37, so it's not a deal-breaker. You can have one for decaf, and two different regular brews in the other two.

The Secret Weapon

BUNN's secret weapon with this brewer is in the electronics. First, the 38700.0009 can handle varying water pressures, and even water hardness, automatically. That's like guaranteeing a full flavor. This consistency theme is continued with their LCD display and the touchpad. These give you control over the brew level and the tank temperature. If there's a fault the LCD displays a diagnostic error code.

Naturally, you have pre-infusion for maximum flavor extraction. That's fully programmable. You can program the warmers to shut off automatically after a set period so your coffee doesn't overheat. And the tank temperature is allowed to fall when the brewer is not in use. Again, you have full control via the programming, and it's all good for your energy bill.

Further Controls

If you want to make soups or other hot beverages then there's a separate hot water faucet. And although the 38700.0009 makes just one pot at a time, and stops when each pot is brewed, you only have to press the Brew button again for the next pot.

When you're finished at the end of the day you just turn it off via the on/off switch at the back of the machine.

Consumer Ratings

There aren't many reviews of the BUNN 38700.0009 on Amazon - just 11 at the time of writing. Probably most purchasers are business owners and don't have the time or inclination to write a review. But of those who have reviewed this brewer the consensus is that it delivers great tasting coffee. They've found it easy to use and clean, and the choice of brews is wide ranging. Together they've awarded an average score of well over four stars.

One reviewer found he couldn't get hot water to come out of the spout. This was probably more to do with the way the brewer had been plumbed into the water supply than with the brewer itself. Bear in mind that the BUNN 38700.0009 doesn't come ready to brew. It has to be connected to a separate water supply, and preferably to a separate power line as well.

You may need professional help with this, though YouTube can help in resolving most issues that occur.

In short, owners of this brewer are well satisfied with its performance.

Summary

The BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 commercial coffee brewer is a reliable workhorse that delivers to its users what they want without any undue fuss. It's not completely "set and forget", as you have to brew one carafe at a time. But with a generously sized tank and a high-volume brew capability, it's almost as hands-free as they come.

It's not tied to K-Cups or anything similar, so you have a wide choice of brews. Most importantly, it's extremely easy to use, and gives a high level of control to the user. It may not win any prizes for style or looks, but then who needs that for an office coffee maker?

So if you're looking for a rock-solid, reliable, coffee maker for your busy office or reception area then this brewer deserves careful consideration.

Keurig B3000SE Review

"Our most advanced brewing system for large offices." That's how the Keurig B3000SE Coffee Maker and Espresso Machine is described by Keurig themselves.

A coffee brewing system that is used by dozens, possibly hundreds, of people throughout the day has to be advanced. They all want different brews, in different strengths, with different flavors and in different amounts. And they don't want to have to go through a complex procedure to get it, either.

So, against this considerable challenge, how does the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker measure up?

A Heavy Duty Office Machine

Keurig's B3000SE is designed and built for constant heavy use. The kind of use that only a large, busy office can provide. And if you've ever worked in such a place you'll know that people don't want to wait for their refreshment. They want it at the touch of no more than a couple of buttons.

They want an intuitive interface so they don't have to think unduly. So they can seamlessly carry on talking with their colleagues about the latest office management techniques and other gossip.

But they also want their exact choice of brew to taste good, and not have overtones of the previous brew. And they certainly don't want any interruptions for refilling the reservoir or anything else that could spoil their day.

Can the Keurig B3000SE handle all of that? Let's see. It has an LCD display that is simple to use (more on that below), and it has speed. It uses regular K-Cups (not "my K-Cups" as it's a commercial machine), so there's no messing with actual grinds. The capsules are auto-ejected and every 35 to 40 brews the display alerts you to empty the bin. If you need more storage you can add a platform that takes another 70 empty capsules.

The Coup de Grace

You're also alerted if you forget to put your cup on the drip tray or a K-Cup pod in place. And if you want hot water only there's a separate dispenser for it. You can easily rinse the internal works clean of any vestige of the hot chocolate brewed by the previous user.

And, finally, the coup de grace. The B3000SE is plumbed in to the main water supply. This does away with a reservoir and all its attendant cleaning and constant refilling. This coffee brewer can happily go on supplying coffee in all measures and from all kinds of K-Cup all day. Non-stop and without complaint or even much attention at all.

That seems to have the "heavy duty" box ticked.

Spoilt For Choice

Using the K-Cup capsules, the B3000SE can brew in sizes of 4-oz, 6-oz, 8-oz and 10-oz. The 4-oz is really for espressos or iced coffee. If you want a larger brew you can flip the drip tray and insert a mug of up to 20-oz.

As for blend and taste, you are restricted to K-Cups. However, in an office environment this matters less than at home. And you still enjoy a choice of K-Cups that extends to over 200 coffee and tea varieties. And a dozen or so of the top coffee and tea brands. If that's not enough, you can set the brewing temperature to between 187 and 192 degrees, according to your preference.

There's a separate hot water dispenser for when you need hot water for tea or some other beverage. You can get up to 10-oz at a time. It does make some noise when working, though only for a matter of seconds. Nothing that sounds out of place in a busy office.

There's one final level of choice. If you're the boss, paying for office refreshments out of your own pocket, you'll like this. You can connect the B3000SE to a vending machine so users have to pay for their drinks. This setup can take both US and Canadian currencies, and increases prices in 5-cent units.

Keurig B3000SE - another view

Easy As LCD

An office machine like the Keurig B3000SE might be used by dozens of different people all the time. So it has to be simple to operate, and it is.

The four buttons below the LCD screen are used to select from the choices presented. The LCD readout is inter-active and intuitive, and key to the simplicity of operating the machine. Even the language can be selected on setup from English, French and Spanish.

Most users will just lift the brew handle, place their cup on the drip tray, put the K-Cup in place, close the handle, select their cup size and press the button.

It's not only for selecting your drink. The LCD display also provides diagnostic messages when something's wrong, such as if the capsule bin needs emptying. And, of course, if 60 seconds is a long time to you, you can check progress on the LCD screen.

Cleaning Up The Keurig B3000SE

Ease of cleaning is important in an office environment. As we've seen, there's no reservoir to clean. The outside of the B3000SE just needs a wipe with a damp cloth once in a while. The internal works should be regularly cleaned by running a measure of hot water only, and discarding it.

You can remove the drip tray very easily for cleaning. The filter should be replaced at least every six months. Descaling should be carried out regularly, using 80-oz of descaling solution. Some users simply do a regular brew with vinegar and water and find that works perfectly well.

As for servicing, if you regularly purchase your K-Cups from a dealer then he will probably be happy to service your machine free of charge. Worth checking out.

Consumer Ratings

Keurig is one of the leading coffee maker manufacturers and have been named the coffee maker "Brand of the Year" for all five years from 2012 to 2016 by the Harris Poll EquiTrend® Equity Study. You can read more about them in our review of the Keurig K45 here.

At the present time there are less than 40 reviews of the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker on Amazon. They give an average score in excess of 4 out of 5 stars, with over 70 per cent giving four or five stars.

Many reviewers love how it functions non-stop with hardly any attention required. That's largely down to having it plumbed in to the main water supply, and no reservoir to worry about.

The ease of use and lack of mess is also appreciated. The used capsules just fall into the bin by themselves at the end of the brew.

Some users complain that they don't seem to have all the parts they need to install it. That underlines the fact that you need a plumber to set up this coffee maker properly. The instructions also leave something to be desired, but if you employ a plumber then you won't need them.

All in all, most users of the Keurig B3000SE are very happy with their purchase.

Summary

The Keurig B3000SE is a heavy duty coffee maker for use in a busy office or reception area. It's not for domestic use unless you want another device plumbed into your domestic water supply.

It is easy to use, and cuts out the mess often associated with K-Cup machines. You really do need a plumber to set it up, but once that's done then maintenance is very easy.

So if you need to keep your workforce happy and/or impress commercial visitors, the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker is an extremely good choice.

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Review

Just look at this DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine, to give it the official title. DeLonghi says it has all the features of a full-size automatic espresso machine but in a streamlined, compact design.

It boasts not one, but two, stainless steel boilers, and a unique "beans to brew" system. Meaning it grinds your beans and produces espressos that can't be beaten for freshness, aroma, and taste. And with no stale grounds left in the machine. This product is presented as the best espresso maker you can get for under $1,000.

Backed up by the facts, or just hype? Let's take a look and find out.

Total Control with Ease of Use

When you've paid this kind of money for an espresso machine, you'll want total control down to the last detail. And a short learning curve with extreme ease of use. Plus, of course, espressos and coffee that just blow you away.

The ESAM3300 has a simple control panel that belies the number of settings and adjustments that are at your fingertips.

But DeLonghi have cheated a little bit here. Not that it matters. In fact, it makes operation that much easier. They've put the burr grinder knob, that controls how much you want your beans ground, inside the grinder itself. It's under the lid on the top of the machine, with seven settings, no less. Well, you probably won't want to change the grinding level very often, even though you know how to use a coffee maker. So out of sight, out of mind. Don't forget it, though.

All you have on the control panel itself are four buttons, sleek and stylish as they are, and two knobs. You rotate the knobs to control the amount of water per cup and the strength of brew. Two of the buttons are to select one cup or two. Then there are the on/off button and the steam/hot water button.

Underneath are the on/off light and a couple of warning lights (low water and de-scaling) and two more knobs to control the cleaning functions.

It's a bit like the dashboard of a top-of-the-range BMW car. There's not a lot to meet the eye, but it gives you total control over all functions. Now to do justice to the Delonghi ESAM3300 in one short review.

Luxury Plus...

With a conical burr bean grinder and a milk frother built in, this espresso machine is all you need, whatever your coffee requirements. You place your beans (anything from 1/2 to 8-oz) in the grinder and in three minutes you have your brew. Often less. If you want to use ground coffee then you simply put it in the adjoining tray and hit the button. My money's on the beans as the more popular choice.

Select the amount of water and the strength of brew. This will take some trial and error until you're familiar with the machine. Choose one cup or two. The rest is up to the type of beans you have chosen, and the grind level you have set.

Once you've done that, you can sit back and watch as the Delonghi ESAM3300 grinds, tamps and extracts automatically. Except that you can't actually do that, can you? That would be, well, too easy. But it's all part of the fun. You have to froth your milk. Just put your cup of milk under the frother and turn the steam knob just above it. If you don't want froth then just keep the wand deep in the milk.

You can rotate the frother 180 degrees, and you can raise or lower the coffee spigot. So any cup size, from an espresso single cup to a long, tall latte, can be accommodated. You have a 60-oz water tank removable from the front for more convenience. You have a water level indicator, a generous sized bean container, and an electronic steam and coffee thermostat.

On top of all that, DeLonghi claim that the Delonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica is the only super-automatic machine that allows you to fill the water tank and empty the coffee grounds without moving the machine.

And it auto shuts off after three hours of non-use.

...a Traditional Espresso Experience

Is all this luxury too much? Do you want a good old-fashioned espresso machine that has hot water dripping out of every outlet and needs a drawer full of rags each day for the mopping up?

If you do then you'll only be mildly disappointed. The DeLonghi ESAM3300 does drip a little water and needs a decent rag for mopping up. Just like every other espresso machine on the planet. Especially if you dip your steam iron tube into the milk. So who's going to complain about that? [Some people actually do - see the Consumer Ratings below.]

Another common feature with espresso machines is that they don't have a water filter, and that applies here too. You have to filter your water yourself first, for optimum taste. Some users use a reverse osmosis system of water filtration.

They don't like oily beans either. Best to stick to a high-quality medium roasted espresso blend such as Lavazza. Don't forget that if you have any issues with your machine you can call DeLonghi's dedicated call center for help.

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Control Panel
Control Panel

Isn't Cleaning A Bit of a Chore?

Most users agree the cleaning is rather easy. Just as well, as this is really important with any espresso machine. Probably more than half of the negative reviews of coffee makers are from users who haven't cleaned their machine regularly.

The drip tray and grounds bin can be easily removed and cleaned. The milk frother easily disassembles for rinsing under the tap. And the brew unit, incorporating the double boiler, is compact enough to be easily removed for cleaning. With that out of the way, you can easily clean the inside of the unit. A damp rag is all you'll need (you'll have enough of them, surely?) with no strong detergents required.

Every so often you'll have to decalcify the machine. This depends on how much you use it and how hard the water is in your area. You don't have to periodically inspect anything, though. The appropriate warning light will come on. You then simply put your cleaning solution in the water tank and press the decalcifying button on the control panel.

So cleaning isn't a bit of a chore. In fact, it's almost enjoyable. But don't forget that every two or three years your espresso machine will need a more thorough service. This should be carried out by an authorized dealer, and it will set you back around $250 to $300. You could, of course, save the money and take a chance. You might be lucky. But it's probably safer to pay up and have your ESAM3300 still faithfully satisfying your coffee habit for years after.

About Those Two Stainless Steel Boilers...

Having two stainless steel boilers sounds impressive -- and it is. DeLonghi haven't taken any shortcuts with this product. It's designed and made in Italy, where they know just about all there is to know about espresso machines.

It has a 1,150-watt motor and the whole appliance is covered by a 2-year limited warranty. But does it really need the double boiler?

Even having two boilers doesn't let the ESAM3300 brew coffee and steam milk at the same time. But it's comforting to know they're there, providing the power for such things as

  • warming your cups on the cup tray so they don't bring the coffee temperature down, just like at the coffee shop,
  • maintaining the optimum temperature so your coffee brews instantly,

as well as the heating of your espresso and milk.

Consumer Ratings

This section is a little longer than usual because I think it's important to cover some common misconceptions. Coffee maker reviews are different from reviews of most other products. Espresso machines and coffee makers are precision instruments that work with coffee beans, milk, and water at extremely high temperatures. That they typically work as well as they do is a tribute to the inventiveness and ingenuity of their designers and manufacturers.

Most reviewers, of course, understand this and are full of praise for an espresso machine like the DeLonghi ESAM3300. The ease of use, speed of brew, ease of cleaning, compactness and attractive styling, are generally appreciated. So is the quality of the coffee produced.

Others have posted negative reviews. One of the complaints about this machine is that the water tank, at 60-oz, is too small.

Sorry? A water tank of 60-oz is too small? Come on! What sized espressos are they brewing? Someone else with a similar complaint brews Americanos. In this machine? It's like using a Formula One racing car for the shopping.

Someone else doesn't like how the frother expels a few drops of water before it releases steam - it's too messy. Hey, this is an espresso machine. That's what espresso machines do. The laws of physics apply to them as much as to everything else.

But in spite of some reviews (with accompanying low scores) like this, the DeLonghi ESAM3300 scores impressively on Amazon. Over 4 out of 5 stars from over 800 reviews, to be nearly exact. Nearly three-quarters of reviewers give it four or five stars.

Summary

The DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine is a top quality product from a leading manufacturer. Luxury is what it promises and luxury is what it delivers.

More than almost any other espresso machine available today, it has panache. It has style. It has a simple control panel that enables you to produce the exact drink that you want. The size of brew, single or double cup, the amount of water, the strength of the brew, the foam or creaminess of the milk - all are determined by you.

Yet it also gives you the traditional fun of an espresso. You still need a rag to keep it clean and to run it through cleaning and decalcification routines. But it does everything else for you. And if you look after it then it will look after your coffee requirements for years to come. You can purchase this espresso maker with a high degree of confidence.

Moccamaster KBG 741 Coffee Brewer Review

The Moccamaster KBG 741 "should be the last coffee brewer you will ever buy". It "should last a lifetime, when cleaned and descaled properly".

These are the brave words of Techni Vorm, the company that manufactures this remarkable coffee maker. Let's take a close look at the KBG 741 and see if it really will outlive us.

Choice and Quality

Do you have a problem with your existing coffee brewer? Are you fed up with luke warm coffee you have to drink quickly before it cools? Are the health and environmental implications of plastic parts in your current coffee maker worrying you? Do the restrictions of coffee pods make you uneasy? Do you yearn for quality coffee that is hot, even when you brewed it an hour ago, and that has a taste to die for?

And are you getting tired of the bland look of so many of your kitchen appliances? Yes? Well, in that case, read on, because....

One of the first things that hits you about the Moccamaster KBG 741 is the number of different colors and finishes to choose from. No less than sixteen, in all (at the time of writing). From red metallic to royal blue, to polished silver, white metallic, brushed brass, copper, and, of course, black (metallic or matte), and more. First word of warning here - the prices vary according to color and finish, so if that's an issue, better check.

But whatever you choose you're going to be impressed with the solid quality of the build. Just lifting it out of its packaging tells you this product is well made with quality components. Knowing this coffee brewer carries a 5-year warranty and satisfies the strict requirements of the ECBC (European Coffee Brewer Centre), is also good to know. The more so when you've invested around $300 or more.

Lesser coffee makers are made largely of plastic, and often in China. Not so with the Moccamaster. The components are largely aluminum. There's very little plastic, and the all-important boiling element is of copper.

Technivorm and Moccamaster

The Techni Vorm company was formed in the Netherlands in the mid-1960s with a philosophy of producing long-lasting, reliable, energy-efficient and recyclable products. All products are hand-made in their Netherlands factory and individually tested before being released to distributors.

Apart from the ECBC, the Specialty Coffee Associations of both America and Europe have to be satisfied with the quality of each product as well. And they are.

Moccamaster Carafe
Moccamaster KBG 741 Carafe

Moccamaster KBG 741 Secrets

What do most of us want from our coffee maker? First, we want delicious, smooth coffee, and the KBG 741 gives us that. But we also want it quickly, and with ease. This coffee brewer takes between 4 and 6 minutes to brew from beans to your cup, with a pulse action. That is the ideal saturation time for the hot water to extract the full flavor from the coffee beans.

What about the ease of use? Here, things can't get much easier. There are just two switches - on/off and high/low (the hot plate setting).

The copper boiling element heats the water to 196 to 205 degrees F. The cone-shaped brew basket funnels the coffee into the glass carafe by way of a "destratification tube". This extends to the bottom of the carafe, so stratification, or layering, of the coffee is avoided. The result is a natural mixing action, and a smoothness of taste that has to be experienced to be believed.

When checking the measurements for this machine (40-oz, or "ten cups") bear in mind that they speak in European terms. Their sizes of cup are smaller than in the US, but even so, you have enough for four good sized cups straight away.

And you don't have to hurry your drink. The hot plate, with its own auto-adjusting dual-phase element, will keep the coffee in the carafe hot, at either 176 or 185 degrees F. You choose. It will shut off after 120 minutes - ample time for anyone to empty the carafe in a leisurely manner.

Is It Difficult To Clean?

The Moccamaster KBG 741 is a modular coffee brewer. One advantage of this is that you can easily disassemble it, and this helps in the cleaning process. You only have to detach the brew basket and the glass carafe. Everyone knows glass is easy to clean. And drippage down the outside of the carafe only occurs if you try and pour from it too quickly.

Periodically you should clean thoroughly, using one of the descaling powder products that Techni Vorm recommend. That's a condition of their promise that this product will last as long as you do. And thanks to YouTube there's no excuse for not knowing how to clean a coffee maker.

So the answer is that this coffee maker is very easy to clean.

Consumer Ratings

At the time of writing this product enjoys an outstanding rating on Amazon. It has an average of over 4.4 stars from over 320 reviews. Over three-quarters of reviewers have awarded the full 5 stars. There aren't many products that can boast that.

The main reasons users love this product are that it produces smooth, great tasting coffee, and is simple to operate. The solid build, utilizing aluminum and copper, with only a little plastic, is also popular.

Some have said how expensive it is, but most consider it to be well worth the price. Some have complained about the long power cord, that is also thick (to comply with European requirements). However, this product is wider than it is deep, and so you can store the cord behind it quite easily.

Breville BES840XL Review

The Breville BES840XL, known as the Infuser Espresso Machine, is the ideal machine for those of us who want all the benefits of the Breville BES870XL but want to grind our beans separately.

Breville BES840XL The Infuser Espresso Machine

This espresso maker looks similar to the BES870XL, except that it has no burr grinder or outlet port built in. It comes in at nearly $100 cheaper. So is there anything else you don't get, that you would with the 870?

Taste is Everything

What everyone wants from an espresso maker like this is great tasting coffee. Of course, good looks count as well, but these come as secondary by quite a margin.

The Breville Infuser does, in fact, look good, and is compact enough for small work tops. But its main distinguishing feature is what Breville call its pre-infusion function, which enhances the taste of the coffee.

We all know how the coffee grinds have to be completely saturated so as to release their flavor fully, and that this is invariably done through a sprinkler method with the water being forced in under high pressure.

The trouble with this is that if there are gaps and other irregularities in the coffee puck (as there often are) the water can sometimes bounce off parts of it and fail to capture the full flavor, and this weakens the final taste.

The Breville 840XL overcomes that problem by releasing the water onto the grinds under low pressure at first. This allows it to seep into all the grinds, allowing them to expand at a more natural rate. Then the water pressure is increased to squeeze all the goodness out of the grinds and into the coffee itself.

A little complicated, perhaps, but it results in superbly tasting coffee from this remarkable espresso machine. It heats to the right temperature in around a minute, and in 5 minutes it will have made 2 cups of coffee. This is fast by any standard. It also takes only 45 to 60 seconds to steam regular fat milk, and is equally fast with other kinds of milk.

Full Temperature Control

Other models from Breville feature an auto purge function that automatically adjusts the water temperature downwards after it has steamed the milk, so it's not too hot for extracting the espresso. The Breville BES840XL has that very same function as well.

The replaceable water filter in the 61 fl oz tank will deal with all the impurities in your water supply. The result of all this is to bring you some of the best tasting coffee that it's possible to make.

No-one can say that Breville are taking any chances with the taste of your coffee.

Breville BES840XL Build Quality and Design

The build quality and design features of Breville domestic machines are legendary. At the heart of the Infuser is the 1600 watt thermocoil heating system with control over the water temperature being achieved through an integrated stainless steel water coil.

A 15 bar Italian pump ensures that you won't have any problem getting the water pressure sufficiently high. Automatic settings, such as temperature and pressure, work in tandem with programmable settings such as the volume of grinds you use, and the degree of grinding and tamping you decide upon.

Indicators show when the drip tray needs emptying or the machine itself needs cleaning. And, of course, Breville's distinguishing feature - the pressure gauge - tells you whether or not the extraction pressure is correct.

The design oof the Breville BES840XL is such that you don't have to stick with your usual coffee cups or mugs - a travel mug can be accommodated as well.

Total Control With Complete Ease of Use

The volume of each shot is pre-set, and you can accept these or over-ride them manually, or even re-program with your own preferences. And as with other Breville espresso machines the steam wand that dispenses the milk froth can be rotated round 360 degrees for complete control over your lattes and cappuccinos.

From the cup and mug warmer on the top to the magnetic tamper that clings to its appointed place when not in use, Breville have gone to a lot of trouble to make this espresso maker easy to use.

No Hassle Cleaning

The Breville BES840XL has a system that removes excess water from the ground coffee in the filter basket, making removal of the resulting residue very easy. The drip tray and water tanks can easily be removed, and you should replace the water filter every two months or so.

Even though you have a water filter, as with all coffee makers, it's best to use filtered water anyway and to decalcify your espresso machine every three or four months using white vinegar. But at least you don't have a grinder on it to clean as well - a separate grinder is invariably easier to clean.

Consumer Ratings

At the time of writing, over 390 users have left reviews on Amazon and awarded this espresso maker an average score of over 4 stars.

Most of them love how easy it is to use, clean and understand. Most agree it's a great machine for the price, though the alleged savings of $300 have been called into question.

Some reviewers have had a problem in getting the pressure gauge to register any reading at all. It turns out that they may have been using too coarse a grind. The answer seems to be to use a finer grind, even a Turkish grind, to fill the portafilter in two or three stages, and to tamp down after each stage so that your grind is compact and firm.

Summary

I've mentioned that the BES840XL is around $100 cheaper than the BES870XL, largely because it doesn't have a burr grinder built in. But that's about the only thing the BES870XL has that the Infuser doesn't.

Whatever the savings this product is still expensive at nearly $500. However, if you're a serious coffee connoisseur then it will be money well spent, and if you're a regular at Starbucks then doubly so. One user claims that their BES840XL paid for itself in three months!

It's fun to learn how to use, and once you've mastered the art then, provided you clean it when the time comes, the Breville Infuser BES840XL will provide you with world class coffee of all types without complaint for years to come.

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine – A Review

The Breville BES870XL Barista - One Hundred Per Cent Flavor

One thing has to be clear from the start. The Breville BES870XL Barista is an espresso maker that can extract all the flavor from fresh coffee beans and deliver you an espresso brewed to your exact requirements every time, and fast.

To do this, it has a number of formidable weapons in its armory. First of all, it's powered by a 1600 watt thermocoil heating system (coupled with a 15 bar Italian pump) significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the 860. This is made of a superior aluminum, with a stainless steel lining, so it isn't going to give out anytime soon.

Consumer Ratings Summary

Also of stainless steel is the conical burr grinder at the top of the machine. That and the integrated, sealed bean hopper (taller than the previous model) means you can grind your beans as finely or as coarsely as you want.

The grinder actually works separately from the machine itself, so you could use pre-ground beans if you want, but there's really no point because the Barista Express will do it all for you so you can enjoy freshly ground beans.

Then there are the filters. Four of them. Two are dual walled, and two single walled. Each pair also has one that is pressurized, and one that is non-pressurized. The pressurized is probably best while you're learning the art of being a barista, and the non-pressurized is for more experienced coffee-makers.

There's also a charcoal filter in the massive 67 fluid ounce water tank to ensure your tap water doesn't spoil the taste of your espresso. Many users filter their water anyway, so this provides an extra filtering stage.

Regulation of the water temperature is vital to producing great tasting espressos. The purge function takes care of this, so any excess steam is expelled and not trapped inside.

No less important is how the brewing is actually done. You must have the water distributed evenly throughout the grinds. The pre-brew function and the flat shower head mean that all your grinds without exception are saturated with water and contribute towards the taste.

In short, this espresso maker solves the age-old problem of coffee beans beginning to lose their flavor from the moment they're ground. The integrated burr grinder on the Barista Express 870 doesn't give them the chance.

Total Control From Start To Finish

This is a semi-automatic machine, so you have as much control as you want. Many users will be happy to let the 870 run most functions on auto, but there are some that require your input so as to produce an espresso to your exact requirements.

First off, how much do you want to brew? The volumetric control lets you select one cup or two, with manual over-ride, and is reprogrammable. On top, the burr grinder and sealed bean hopper can take half a pound of beans, and you have the grind size and grind amount selector dials there, as well as the grind adjuster wheel.

The filter size button lets you tell the machine whether you're using a single or dual wall filter, so it dispenses the correct amount of grinds. Probably the default temperature setting will give you water that's quite hot enough, but this is adjustable to make it hotter or cooler.

Finally, you have control over the milk texturing of your lattes and cappuccinos. The stainless steel steam wand has a 360 degrees swivel action so you can perfect your latte art whenever you want.

Breville even give you non-slip feet to prevent the machine from moving around on your kitchen worktop. They really do seem to have thought of everything.

From Beans To Espresso In Less Than A Minute

Just because we want complete control in what we produce, and the fullest flavor espressos that extract everything the coffee beans have to offer doesn't mean we want to hang around while our Breville BES870XL Barista Express does its job.

This machine warms up in just 45 seconds, and Breville claim that it's then less than a minute from beans to espresso. The YouTube video embedded below will help you judge if it really is that fast. We think it is.

About The Cleaning . . .

Breville obviously thought a great deal about the cleaning aspect when this product (and its predecessor, come to that) was still at the design stage. You have a whole lot more than the obligatory removable drip tray and removable water tank that comes with a handle.

When the machine needs cleaning it activates a "Clean Me" light. But it's not such a chore as you'd expect. The Breville BES870XL Barista Express removes excess water from the filter basket after the coffee has been extracted, which makes for quicker cleaning.

On top, the hopper unlocks easily for cleaning, and the upper part of the burr grinder releases at a twist for removal and rinsing. You can just vacuum the lower part.

In addition, Breville provide cleaning tools for the 870. There's a little storage compartment where they're all kept - out of the way but always accessible.

Consumer Ratings

It's little wonder that reviewers on Amazon love this machine. They like its speed and that there's no guess work involved. They love its stylish stainless steel casing and robust build, and the fact that after a short time they can program it to produce what to them is the perfect brew.

The Breville BES870XL Barista Express scores just under 4.5 stars on average from over 900 reviews at the time of writing, with nearly three-quarters of reviewers giving the full 5 stars.

One or two reviewers have left adverse comments about the taste of the coffee, but bear in mind when reading these that there are a few "rules" that have to be observed. For example, if you use cheap coffee beans that you have ground a couple of weeks earlier then you're obviously not going to get a great taste, even with this machine.

To get the best out of the Breville BES870XL Barista Express you have to use good quality beans, freshly roasted, and preferably espresso roasted. When you use the grinder for the first time, set it to its coarsest level, and then dial it down when it starts ejecting the grounds.

Keep the steam wand clean by letting some steam out of it for about 10 seconds after each brew. This prevents milk from backing up into the machine and spoiling the taste of the next brew. Do this even if you've just brewed black coffee.

Make use of the cup warmer on top of the machine. Coffee houses never serve their coffee in cold cups (except for iced coffee), and there's a reason for it. If you warm the machine and accessories before use it all helps to ensure better-tasting espressos.

If you ever find that the beans fail to be fed into the grinder, it may be because they're a little oily, in which case just tap the hopper and they'll go in all right.

It's a great espresso maker, as long as you read and follow the instructions, and that should help ensure you'll be giving a 5-star rating to the 870 when it's your turn to review.

Summary

If you can't take in all of what's written here, then please just accept that this espresso maker is wildly popular with its users, who can't all be wrong. It delivers coffee house quality brews in an incredibly short time and gives you almost total control over each stage.

The Breville BES870XL Barista Express Coffee Machine is a versatile, solid, good looking machine that won't disappoint you. Click the button below to check the latest deal on Amazon.

Keurig K75 Platinum Brewing System Review

The Keurig K75 Platinum Brewing System is an illustration of the fact that, by and large, you get what you pay for.
This coffee maker is at the high end of the price scale, but when you unpack it and stand it on your kitchen table you'll know that you're looking at sheer quality. The heavy duty nature of this product means that it is suitable for use in an office environment as well as at home, so whatever your domestic situation it will comfortably provide a quality service to all your friends and family.

Summary

The Keurig K75 - Great Looking Coffee Maker That Oozes Taste

The Keurig K75 will look good in your kitchen. Of that there can be no doubt. The sleek, super-sized reservoir extends stylishly over the top of the drip tray, and the back-lit LCD display shows the time, auto-off settings, cup size selected and brew temperature.

Below the display are just four buttons that belie the amount of control you have at your disposal. Access the menu with the comfortably sized button of that name, and use the two side buttons to make your selection. Then one press of the brew button just below does the rest.

Control and Adaptability

With a massive 72 ounce water reservoir and the ability to brew a tad under 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz cups, the Keurig K75 offers you control and adaptability. The drip tray, as you would expect, can be removed to accommodate a travel mug when required.

You can also control the brew temperature, thanks to the Quiet Brew Technology® of Keurig. And the Auto On/Off Energy Savings Mode means you won't be paying over the odds for the power consumption.

If you use a separate water filter such as a Brita then you have the option of removing the K75's water filter if you prefer, or the period between replacements can be extended. The purer the water you use then, generally, the longer your coffee maker will last.

But here's a tip. Don't skimp on renewing the filters. You can't make the supplied water filter last forever by filtering your water separately before filtering it again in the reservoir. Over time, the charcoal in the filter will break down (not a design fault - just the laws of physics) and you may find little grains of it get into your coffee. Perfectly harmless, but it may affect the taste.

And here's another one. If you find your K75 scales up too quickly then try using distilled water and marvel at the difference. Thanks to one of the reviewers for that one.

Cons: Filters need replacing regularly if you want to preserve the taste (or you could use filtered water to extend their life).

Customer Ratings

This product scores an average of well over 4 stars from over 1,360 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing, which is exceptionally good. The immediately noticeable trend is that the vast bulk of coffee maker reviews give a full five stars.

Many reviewers enthuse about the K75's good looks, speed, and ease of use. Some negative reviewers have picked up on the fact that it apparently only heats to 170 degrees and not 192, the recommended temperature for coffee. But there is some uncertainty as to whether they are measuring the temperature of the coffee once it has settled in the cup or that of the top of the stream coming out of the unit (which is the correct place to measure from). So don't be put off too easily by people who may be using the wrong criteria to judge the product.

Summary

Keurig is a name associated with high-quality coffeemakers, and the K75 is at the high end of its price range because it is one of their best and most reliable machines.

This coffeemaker has thousands of fans and the overall rate of satisfaction is very high. I have no difficulty in recommending the Keurig K75.
