Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Review

The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker is a fully programmable coffee brewer for domestic use that delivers "coffee on demand". At least, that's what the main sales point is.

And it does this without using a carafe. Plus, it uses coffee grinds, not K-cups or other capsules, so it's much cheaper to operate.

It also boasts separate, removable water and coffee reservoirs that are easy to clean. And you can load the coffee reservoir with up to twelve 5-oz cups worth of grinds.

There's no deterioration of taste or temperature if you want just one to four cups. Just use the 1-4 cups setting on the control panel. Talking of taste, there's a charcoal filter that fits neatly into the water tank to filter out impurities.

So far so good. But does this popular coffee maker have any little secrets that you ought to know about?

What The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Does

It delivers piping hot coffee with no loss of flavor long after it's finished brewing. One cup at a time for up to twelve cups of 5-oz. You can use larger mugs, over six inches tall, by simply removing the drip tray and plate.

Twelve 5-oz cups is quite a lot of coffee grinds, right? So you'll want to keep an eye on how much you have left before you have to brew up again. A quirky looking gauge right above the coffee spout does that for you. At least, it's supposed to, and maybe it mostly does, but see below for more on that.

Of course, you don't always want your coffee straight away. It's nice to have it ready and waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. No problem. You can program this brewer to swing into action up to 24 hours in advance. And no worries about forgetting to switch it off either. You can set it to do just that at any time from immediately after the last brew, to four hours later. Your coffee stays hot for a while after that, so no excuses for cold coffee.

The DCC-3000 Coffee Maker even tells you when it's in need of a clean (how nice of it).

It extracts all the flavor by having a showerhead that distributes the water evenly over the coffee. Your program settings are preserved for up to a minute if there's a temporary loss of power for any reason. And here's a nice touch - when you're pouring your coffee a light comes on so you can see what you're doing.

How The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Works

Put simply, the DCC-3000 Coffee Maker brews coffee into a coffee reservoir for you to dispense whenever you want. The coffee reservoir is heated to 190 degrees (the optimum temperature for flavor extraction), so your coffee stays hot.

How long it stays hot for is up to you via the programming on the control panel. But it does this in such a way that there's no loss of flavor, for up to four hours. That should be enough for one, or even two, people for a whole afternoon. All right, for a couple of hours then, but no less.

It's easy to program it for a smaller quantity. Just press the "1-4" button on the control panel and place the lesser amount of grinds in the coffee reservoir.

The DCC-3000 uses a Gold-Tone Cuisinart Commercial-Style Filter. You can use a paper filter if you prefer (you'll need a #4 cone filter).

What About The Cleaning?

Keeping any coffee maker clean is so important that I've written a separate guide on it. Click here for "How To Clean A Coffee Maker".

The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker needs particular care in keeping it clean. Apart from rinsing the permanent filter each day, rinse the basket it sits in. This may not seem dirty but it is susceptible to condensation. The coffee reservoir also needs an occasional rinse and regular emptying so it doesn't overflow on the next brew.

Several users have reported a problem with the coffee reservoir. There have been occasions when it has leaked, or overflowed, for no apparent reason. It seems that sometimes coffee grime gets under the gasket in the coffee reservoir valve, so the valve can't close fully.

You should be able to avoid any instance of this by carrying out a weekly cleaning routine. You can use coffee pot cleaner, though personally, I prefer a mixture of white vinegar and hot water. Swirl this around the coffee reservoir thoroughly while at the same time pressing the valve with your finger. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Other than that, a wipe of the exterior with a damp cloth is all that's required.

Consumer Ratings

What users of the Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker like most is how it provides instant hot coffee time after time. They like the freshness of their brew even when it's just spent a couple of hours in the coffee reservoir.

As of now, the DCC-3000 has over 2,300 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of well over 4 stars.

Some users have mentioned that the gauge doesn't work properly, and it seems this is an issue on some models. But even for people who experience this problem, it's not a deal breaker. They just have to keep a rough tally of how much coffee they have left in the coffee reservoir.

The power cord can be rather difficult to pull out fully when you first unpack this brewer. However, it does extend to nearly 3 feet, which is long enough for any work top.

I've mentioned the coffee reservoir valve, which can get stuck if not cleaned regularly. However, a little white vinegar and water, and a few minutes a week are all you need to avoid this problem.

Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker is often used as a replacement for a worn-out Cuisinart DCC-1200. It's in the same price bracket and largely does the same things, but Cuisinart have added a couple of extra features.

First, it claims to be 25 per cent faster, thanks to Cuisinart's Extreme Brew technology, taking only about 5 minutes to brew.

Perhaps it is, though few reviewers seem concerned about the speed of it. What they seem to appreciate more is the improved taste, which is down to an improved filter design and the broader water dispensing area squeezing the last ounce of flavor out of the coffee.

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Has All the Best Features of the DCC-1200 - And More

Cuisinart have taken the DCC-1200 and built upon it to produce a machine with the same looks, almost the same dimensions, and the same high-quality component parts, and made it faster and capable of producing even better flavored coffee.

The same permanent gold tone filter is used, but so that it has some space between it and the filter holder. This ensures a more even distribution of the water flow and a slightly faster overall brew process. If you prefer you can use paper filters, which catch more of the sediment that might otherwise end up in your coffee.

Cuisinart have used the same charcoal filter in the water reservoir, and you have to take a little care when inserting this. But it is important to have your water filtered properly. If you skimp on this it can spoil the taste of what would have been great coffee.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Speed; choice of gold tone or paper filters; charcoal water filter means improved taste; 24-hour programmer; temperature control; brew pause; brew any number of cups in one go.

Cons: Carafe hot plate can sometimes malfunction if not looked after and cleaned regularly.

Customer Ratings

Over 1,190 reviewers have awarded this coffee maker an average of well over 4 out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing. Nearly three-quarters of them have given 4 or 5 star ratings. Many users particularly love how the coffee tastes great, how they can control the strength of it and keep the coffee in the carafe hot for up to 4 hours without burning.

Some people less happy cited the carafe hot plate ceasing to work properly or the coffee not being hot enough. However, the vast majority of users seem very happy with their DCC-2650, and, in any event, there is a 3-year warranty, something some of the negative reviewers were happy to take advantage of.

Another point worth remembering when reading the reviews is that all coffee makers need a little TLC at regular intervals. YouTube has some excellent videos showing how to clean a coffee maker. When a coffee maker gives out prematurely it can sometimes be on account of the lack of care given it during its lifetime.

Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

About the first thing you notice about the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central is the control panel on the front. Displaying the time when not in use, it also shows other settings. These can be anything from the strength of brew to the number of cups ordered. Or when it's time to remove any calcification from the water reservoir.

Below that is the carafe, contained neatly inside the frame and enhanced with a stainless steel strip around the lower circumference and down the ergonomic handle that stays cool at all times.

This product from one of the leading names in coffee makers certainly looks good, but is it just looks alone?

Consumer Ratings Summary

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 Has A Deceptively Large Capacity

You wouldn't think so by looking at it, but the DCC-2600 can brew up to 14 cups in one go. To give you full control, there's a cup measure from two to fourteen cups on the side of the carafe. There's also a Water Level Indicator Window in the water reservoir. This makes it very easy to feed into it exactly the right amount of water.

But you don't have to brew in bulk. The settings allow for 1 to 4 cups to be selected if you so wish. And you don't have to sacrifice any taste or heat (which sometimes happens with other multi-cup coffee makers).

Quality Filters Equals Quality Taste

While the coffee itself produces the flavor, the water that comes out of your tap can ruin it. That's why the water filter is just as important as the coffee filter in a coffee maker.

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 uses a high-quality charcoal water filter to eliminate the chlorine and other undesirables found in any water supply and that would otherwise spoil the taste of your coffee.

But do make sure you renew the filter regularly. Charcoal does a great job, but it's unstable. It becomes clogged after a while with all the stuff that would otherwise get into your coffee.

Cuisinart recommend changing it every 60 days or 60 uses - more often if you have calcium-rich water in your area. People leaving two-star reviews because the taste deteriorated should check on this point.

The filter for the coffee itself is a permanent Gold Tone filter that doesn't need replacing - merely cleaning. You can, if you prefer, use paper filters instead, as this is largely a matter of taste. And of how you use a coffee maker.

Cons: The carafe lid can leak and dribble water down the outside if care is not exercised.

Consumer Ratings

The Cuisinart DCC-2600 has over 4 stars from over 880 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing. Over two thirds give it a full 5 stars, which is an impressive rating for any product. The people who love it do so mainly because of the great taste of the coffee it produces. And that it's so convenient and easy to use, whether for a straightforward brew or for programming a brew in a few hours' time.

Some users have had problems with the carafe and lid. If any water dribbles down the outside of the glass it can enter your cup and spoil the taste.

But most users appear not to have those problems, or to have dealt with them without any fuss.

Summary

Cuisinart is an established brand of coffee maker, and this DCC-2600 model has been particularly successful. On reading the reviews it's evident that the manufacturers have taken on board feedback from earlier models and made improvements.

The result is a product that delivers great tasting coffee when required and in the right quantities. And that has an enviable reputation in its field. You can buy the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central with confidence that you'll almost certainly be pleased you did.
