BUNN VP17 Coffee Maker Review

The most complex thing about the BUNN 13300.0001 VP17-1SS Pourover Coffee Brewer (or BUNN VP17 for short) is its name. But despite the simplicity of its operation this is, in the words of one reviewer on Amazon, "a quality product made of commercial grade materials". Another reviewer on Amazon writes, "My set up is worth every penny spent".

The enthusiasm of most reviewers on Amazon for this product is loud and clear. Can everyone really be that happy with it? Let's take a closer look at this highly-rated coffee brewer.

Is The BUNN VP17 Coffee Maker Suitable For Your Requirements?

If you require coffee regularly throughout the day, fresh and hot, then the answer is undoubtedly yes. BUNN have made this brewer for heavy use. It's ideal for small hotels and boarding houses, small to medium sized offices, cafes - anywhere people congregate throughout the day and need refreshment. What about a busy restaurant? Yes, there too, even if as a "back-up".

Just plug it in anywhere there's a power supply, pour water in the top, and the coffee starts brewing immediately. The heating element can be left to turn itself on and off as required to keep the water hot. This is why the brew takes only about three minutes. It can handle up to 3.8 gallons an hour, which it decants into standard 64-oz decanters.

As for domestic use, many users are householders and use it at home. However, if you're looking at just one or two people then you'd be wiser to stay with a single-brew machine.

"Pourover" may mean that you only have to pour in as much water as it takes to make the amount of coffee you want. But all the same, it's difficult to make just one cup with the BUNN VP17. To do it justice you really need to work it hard, churning out carafe after carafe. And it will do this all day long, month in and month out, very happily.

Is It Really That Solidly Built?

The BUNN VP17 is made almost entirely from stainless steel. Like all BUNN coffee brewers, it is assembled in Canada. Surprisingly, the funnel mechanism is plastic, which seems a little penny-pinching on the part of BUNN. Probably it's to keep the price down, but you can easily replace it with a stainless steel component. Check it out on Amazon by clicking here. You'll want the BUNN 64-oz stainless steel decanter as well (check this as well on Amazon).

The design is modular, so if one component fails then it can easily be replaced. Parts and spares are readily available. This makes a refreshing change from the "throw-it-away-when-it's-bust" thinking behind so many cheap coffee makers.

It is heavier and taller than most other coffee makers. Check the dimensions below to ensure it will fit on your kitchen worktop.

No More Cold Coffee

When you're brewing up to 3.8-gallons an hour then even with a swift take-up rate you have a problem. Keeping your brewed coffee hot until it's ready for "distribution" and consumption. The BUNN VP17's Warmer, or hot plate, takes care of that. And you have control too - you can turn it off if, for example, you're using a thermal carafe to keep your coffee warm.

Cleaning It All Up

This product is nearly all stainless steel, so cleaning isn't really a problem. Just a quick wipe with a damp cloth is normally all that's required for the outside. Internally, you should wipe the underside of the funnel regularly. Steam from the sprayer head often condenses there. You have to remove the sprayer head and clean the metal tube and spring.

A couple of tips here. Always put the pot in place before starting a brew, and don't use this machine just to get hot water. If you don't obey then you'll probably have a mess to clean up.

Pros and Cons

  • Fast brewing - 3 minutes
  • Solid construction means failures are rare
  • Warmer/hot plate keeps coffee hot after brewing

  • Can be noisy when heating water
  • Heavier and taller than most other coffee makers
  • Decanter is not included

Consumer Ratings for the BUNN VP17

This coffee brewer has earned a very high score of nearly 4.5 from over 200 reviewers on Amazon (as at May 2019). Generally, users love the solid build and the great coffee they can make with it. And, of course, the one to three-year warranty on parts.

So many of them have had to replace their cheap, plastic coffee makers nearly every year for many years and they're glad that the hassle and expense of that are over. They like that they can brew four cups of Starbucks for no more than what they used to pay for one K-cup.

A few users don't like the noise the BUNN VP17 sometimes makes when in brewing mode, but it appears this can usually be rectified by de-liming the machine. The plastic funnel assembly and the lack of a decanter are other complaints, but these can be remedied with only a little extra expense.

The BUNN VP17 is more expensive than most coffee makers, but that expense is justified. You'll save in the long term because this product will stay the course.

It's a commercial machine intended for heavy duty service. If you can provide the volume of coffee-making work that it demands then you'll be well satisfied with your purchase. We recommend this coffee brewer.

Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer Review

The Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer has now been replaced by the Zojirushi CV-DCC40XT VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, but is still available through Amazon from private sellers. You can read our review of the Zojirushi CV-DCC40XT by clicking here.

The CV-DSC40 VE is proof that you really can re-invent the wheel and sell it at a higher price. Provided, of course, that you add a whole lot more value. And give people the extras that they didn't realize they needed until now. It takes what an ordinary kettle does - boil water - and turns it into an art form. That is, a practical system for solving a lot of life's little problems. Problems that we never knew we had until we saw what it can do for us.

All Kinds of Hot Water for a Wide Variety of Uses

What can this Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer give you that an ordinary kettle cannot? The answer is water of whatever temperature you need, whenever you need it.

The Zojirushi CV-DSC40 boils your water for you, and then lets it cool to just the temperature you want, and no lower. The pre-loaded defaults are 175 degrees (appropriate for green teas), 195 degrees (for oolong and white teas), and 208 degrees (for coffee, instant noodles, and black, herbal and pu-erh tea).

The control panel displays the temperature of the water in the reservoir at all times, and you can control it to whatever you want through the computerized control system.

So what is it that you want this device to help you prepare? Coffee and tea of all kinds, soups, noodles, oatmeal - you can prepare all of these easily with water from this hybrid water boiler heated to exactly the right temperature.

You can find countless other uses for it as well, such as warming baby bottles and blanching vegetables. Once you get it in your kitchen you'll never be lost for ways in which to use it.

This Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler is a delight to use - and so fast

Who would have thought that a utility that is basically a kettle could be such fun to use? At the touch of a button, you can re-boil the water or re-set the current temperature. You'll hear an audible beep when the water has boiled, or when the water level in the container has dropped below the minimum level.

It boils as fast as a standard kettle, taking from 7 to 15 minutes to boil a full 4 liters straight from the tap, depending on the temperature of the tap water and the kitchen conditions. Boiling a full container starting from 195 degrees takes about 4 minutes.

Many users use the six- to ten-hour timer feature to have the water heated for their morning tea or coffee when they awake. Just set it for when you want your hot water and this Zojirushi hybrid water boiler does the rest.

Solid Build - But What About The Design?

The driving force behind this machine is a comfortably sized 840 watt water boiler. The water container is vacuum insulated and is able to accommodate 4 liters. The exterior is clear-coated stainless steel that looks good in any kitchen. All materials used in its construction are BPA-free.

Inside, the interior is also stainless steel with an anodized coating, probably Teflon. It conceals the heating element, which doesn't come into contact with the water. Some gaskets and the outer lid are plastic. If and when they suffer from the daily punishment meted out to them, they can be easily and cheaply replaced.

The water level gauge is not only sleek-looking, but on account of its wrap-around design you can easily read it from almost any angle.

The base is on a swivel, so it's easy to orient in any direction. And, being made in Japan, this product is pure quality. It carries a one-year limited warranty from Zojirushi.

Keeping On Top Of The Cleaning

Any device that deals with boiling hot water every day is liable to suffer from the mineral deposits that come with that water, as well as the tremendous forces of expansion and contraction that come with extreme temperatures.

But the non-stick coating of the container ensures that this water boiler can cope with it all without many problems. Of course, you have to boil a couple of container-fulls and discard them when you first use the machine, to expel any impurities left over from the factory, but after that you only need to clean it occasionally. Zojirushi supply their own cleaning powder for the purpose - there's an instructional video on Amazon's page.

Click here for some great tips on how to clean a coffee maker (opens in new tab). Using filtered water goes a long way towards keeping the interior clean enough to make the cleaning chore a rare event.

Safety Aspects of this Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler

Safety is paramount when a device regularly dispenses hot or boiling water. The power cord is just 3 feet long and detachable (as well as magnetic). It easily comes out of the socket if accidentally caught or knocked, rather than risk having the whole device, hot water and all, become mobile and out of control.

To pour the hot water you need to press the Unlock button and then the Dispense button, just to ensure that a responsible adult is doing the dispensing, and not, for example, a small child. And, of course, it has auto shut-off.

Here's a short video showing how the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE does its job:

Features and Specifications:

  • Product Dimensions: 8 x 11 x 14 inches ; 9 pounds
  • Shipping Weight: 7 pounds
  • Item model number: CV-DSC40

Consumer Ratings

Over 540 users on Amazon have reviewed this product at the time of writing (February 2019) and awarded it an average of over 4 stars. They particularly love its speed, convenience, ease of use and safety, as well as its good looks.

The only real bone of contention relates to the way in which it always boils the water before leaving it to cool to the desired temperature, a process that can sometimes take a while.

It may be something that Zojirushi can address when they update this model, so it simply heats the water to the new required temperature and no more. [NB Zojirushi have already updated this model - see the opening line of this review.] Nevertheless, this doesn't seem to trouble the vast majority of users.

Zojirushi are a Japanese company and this product is made in Japan. This is reflected in both the design and the quality of it.

For convenience, ease of use, build quality and design, as well as safety, it would be very hard to imagine any other similar product coming close to the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer. We believe we can recommend this product to you without any hesitation.

Both the Keurig Rivo Cappuccino & Latte System and the Nespresso D121-US-BK-NE1 Citiz Espresso Maker with Aeroccino Milk Frother are in the mid to high price bracket for milk frothers; (the Keurig is currently discounted on Amazon to less than $125) and both products promise a wide choice of great tasting brews, and ease of use and cleaning, among other things.

Both manufacturers are well placed to bring their specialist expertise to bear on high quality coffee - Nespresso is well known for its own coffee products and Keurig for its partnership with Lavazza coffee, which is highly regarded among coffee connoisseurs.

So if these coffee makers are in your price range, which would be the best choice?

Milk Frothers Make Real Milk Froth

There are cheaper coffee makers than these that can produce delicious coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and even iced coffee in many cases, but when you pay more, as with these two products, then the world of real frothed milk, free from the constraints of K-Cups, opens up before you. This is where you can produce brews that are as good as, or even better than, your local coffee shop.

Both of these machines excel at producing great tasting brews embellished with milk froths that can be easily varied according to your own taste. They take any kind of fresh milk, including soy and almond, and can produce either hot or cold beverages in as little as one minute.

Multi-Frothing Modes

The Keurig Rivo (Italian for 'revolutionary') offers three frothing modes - Cappuccino and Latte (as you'd expect from the name) and cold froth, while the Nespresso also gives us Macchiato (which you can actually get with the Keurig as well). So there's plenty of choice with both models.

Most users of the Keurig agree that their milk frothers are superb, but there is sometimes difficulty in getting the amount of froth right. You have to experiment with different levels and remember that if you want more froth then you have to allow more space for it in the cup.

What about the temperature of the milk? This has been a point of contention with some users of both milk frothers. The Nespresso delivers the milk at a temperature of 150 degrees, which many users like as it's "immediately drinkable". Others, though, think it ought to be hotter and that it makes for a cooling effect on the brew itself.

Ensuring Your Coffee is Hot Enough

The trouble is that if the milk is heated up too much there is a risk of it becoming scalded and that would spoil the taste of your brew.

Of course, you can heat your coffee in the microwave for a few seconds as soon as it's been poured out, but this risks overheating the milk - something your coffee maker has avoided. Heating your cup before it's filled with your brew is probably better. Just put some water in it, put it in the microwave for 20 or 30 seconds, and empty the water before replacing it in your coffee machine. After all, coffee houses make sure their cups are warm before the coffee is poured in. Why expect comparable results from cold cups?

Do these two coffee makers measure up to the likes of Mr Coffee and Starbucks in terms of taste? If you're a seasoned coffee taster then you may be able to tell the difference, but to most of us, it would be extremely difficult. And the good thing about these machines is that they are both very consistent in producing great coffee.

Milk Frothers Freedom of Choice - Or Nearly

If you are going to want to change your supplier of coffee pods from time to time then neither of these coffee makers will suit you. But then is it such a disadvantage to be restricted to one supplier?

Well, many of us would be wary about being forced to pay higher than market prices for our coffee capsules from a supplier with a monopoly on our machine, and this issue has been raised in the reviews of both milk frothers.

The Keurig Rivo only accepts pods from Lavazza and the Nespresso, as you'd expect, only takes its own make. But neither company seems to be extortionate. If you're planning to buy the Keurig, then you'll be getting a "starter pack" of 12 pods in four varieties, so you can decide which you prefer before buying whole packets.

Also, make sure you join their club so you can purchase your pods at very favorable prices online, and watch out for promotions when you can bag yourself a bargain. Order well in advance, though, as shipping is slow.

With the Nespresso D121, at around 60 cents a capsule it will be more expensive than using your own grinds but cheaper than Starbucks. And you'll still have a wide choice. There are sixteen varieties in a range of strengths and flavors, including three decafs. You can purchase on Nespresso's web site, which is much cheaper than at the drugstore, or shop for refillable pods (that don't melt in the machine) on eBay.

And it's worth remembering that, though tied to a single supplier of pods, you'll be drinking coffee that is of a consistently good taste.

Keurig Rivo Milk Frother Pros and Cons

Pros: 3 frothing modes and 2 espresso sizes; simple to use; great tasting brews and milk froths.

Cons: For hotter brews you may need to heat your mug first.

Nespresso D-121 Milk Frother Pros and Cons

Pros: Huge 34-ounce water reservoir; holds 10 used capsules; fast; programmable; auto power off; great tasting brews and milk froths.

Cons: Milk frother doesn't heat milk enough for some. As with the Keurig, you may need to heat your mugs first.

Customer Ratings

Keurig Rivo Cappuccino & Latte System

This product scores an average of a little less than 4 stars from over 850 reviewers on Amazon at the time of writing, and over 55 per cent of them give a full 5 stars.

What people love most about the Keurig Rivo is how it produces great froths very quickly without making any mess to speak of. It's easy to use and easy to clean. You just rinse the milk pitcher and frothing stem under hot running water.

There have been a few concerns about the plastic frothing cup showing stress cracks or clouding up. If this were to happen to you then check the warranty as you may need to replace it. If it is made in China then you may want to use a US or European made cup instead, which will have been subject to stricter quality control.

Nespresso D121-US-BK-NE1 Citiz Espresso Maker with Aeroccino Milk Frother

On Amazon at the time of writing, the Nespresso scores well over 4 stars from over 330 reviews, well over two-thirds of them being of 5 stars. So the two milk frothers do have some disparity in terms of ratings.

The sheer good taste of all the various types of coffee it produces is the Nespresso's strong point in the reviews on Amazon. One or two users have mentioned the noise when frothing, but this appears to be a minor issue.

And, like the Keurig Rivo, some say the milk frother doesn't heat the milk sufficiently and that makes the brew tepid. Again, it's a good idea to use warm cups rather than cold.

The Keurig Rivo Cappuccino & Latte System, at under $125, has been heavily discounted from its original price level of around $415.00, and the Nespresso D121-US-BK-NE1 Citiz Espresso Maker is priced from below $250 to over $400, depending on which supplier you purchase from.

So, apart from the price discrepancy, it probably all boils down to whether you prefer the taste of Lavazza coffee or Nespresso. It may be worth checking them out before you buy. Both coffee makers, in their separate ways, produce fabulous coffee with great variety, quickly and with the minimum of mess. And as milk frothers, they produce great milk froth. You can't go far wrong with either.

The Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus – A Review

There are espresso machines, and there is the Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus. As one Amazon reviewer succinctly puts it, "This is no toy."

When it comes to coffee, the Italians are the undisputed world champions. Even the names of the most popular coffees are Italian. And just to underline their dominance of the coffee scene, Italy makes the best coffee makers, espresso machines and milk frothers, of which this product is a leading example.

At first sight, it looks inauspicious, being smaller than many cheaper espresso machines, and the shipping weight doesn't do it justice. There's no conspicuous backlit display either. So what exactly places this product in a class of its own (even compared to other Italian-made machines)?

Consumer RatingsSummary

The Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus - Ease Of Use Taken To The Extreme

The Nespresso Lattissima Plus (by DeLonghi) is every inch an espresso machine. It has a milk container and so gives you freshly steamed milk froths. That's something that a machine using capsules or coffee grinds alone can't do.

Choose your capsule from a selection of three milk and two coffee, and place it in the top of the machine. Slide the milk container into place and put a cup under the nozzle. Then just press the button. It really can't get any easier than this. And that's a blessing on an early winter's morning when you're barely awake.

The Lattissima Plus is programmable, so you can set the froth level, temperature and strength to accord with your preferences. And it remembers them for each time after that.

Even the cleaning up afterward is kept to a minimum. The detachable milk container (which is dishwasher safe) can be placed straight back in the fridge. You just need to press the button to steam clean the nozzle first.

Quality Components Make For A Long Lasting Product

Cheaper machines are often excellent at producing good coffee drinks and are easy to use. But the trouble is that they often don't last very long before developing a major, perhaps fatal, fault.

The reason for this is usually that, to keep manufacturing costs down, cheap, inferior materials and parts are used - commonly plastic instead of stainless steel.

Nespresso-DeLonghi don't make you put up with that. The Nespresso Delonghi Lattissima Plus has a boiler tank and housing that are made of stainless steel. Plastic is used only for trim. The milk carafe and steam wand are made of special BPA-free plastic (which is what you would expect).

  • Weight: 9 pounds
  • Shipping Weight: 12 pounds
  • Materials: Stainless Steel with plastic trim
  • Item model number: EN520SL

Pros and Cons

Pros: Real milk froths and leading Italian coffee drinks; coffee ready to drink immediately; fully programmable with memory; easy to clean.

Cons: Doesn't produce boiling hot coffee (but then you'd have to wait for it to cool down before drinking it anyway).

Customer Ratings for the Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus

Coming in at an average of over 4 stars out of over 880 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing (February 2019), the Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus has a whole legion of fans. Nearly 70 per cent of users have given it a full 5 stars. Simplicity of use is one of the most popular features. Plus the ability to make the leading Italian coffee drinks with real milk froth thanks to the removable milk container.

As ever, there are some negative reviews, and if these trouble you at all then it's wise to read them. Some reviewers have complained that the coffee isn't hot. This machine, however, brews for immediate consumption, so if you have this problem it's best to warm your cup beforehand.

Overall, users of this Nespresso-DeLonghi machine are delighted with their purchase.

DeLonghi is a leading Italian manufacturer which also makes a number of coffee makers for other Italian brands, including, of course, Nespresso (hence the dual branding of this product). And if you want to know how to make good coffee using a coffee maker then this machine won't let you down.

The Nespresso DeLonghi Lattissima Plus espresso machine will make your life easier and treat you to superb Italian coffee of every variety. You can purchase this machine with confidence.

Keurig K75 Coffee Maker Review

The Keurig K75 Coffee Maker (or Single-Cup Home-Brewing System, to give it its full name) is an illustration of the fact that, by and large, you get what you pay for.
This coffee maker is at the high end of the price scale, but when you unpack it and stand it on your kitchen table you'll know that you're looking at sheer quality. The heavy duty nature of this product means that it is suitable for use in an office environment as well as at home, so whatever your domestic situation it will comfortably provide a quality service to all your friends and family.

Note: Sadly, this product has now been discontinued. You may still be able to purchase it, though probably only as second-user, which is why this review has been left in place.

The Keurig K75 Coffee Maker - Great Looking Coffee Maker That Oozes Taste

The Keurig K75 Coffee Maker will look good in your kitchen. Of that there can be no doubt. The sleek, super-sized reservoir extends stylishly over the top of the drip tray, and the back-lit LCD display shows the time, auto-off settings, cup size selected and brew temperature.

Below the display are just four buttons that belie the amount of control you have at your disposal. Access the menu with the comfortably sized button of that name, and use the two side buttons to make your selection. Then one press of the brew button just below does the rest.

Control and Adaptability

With a massive 72 ounce water reservoir and the ability to brew a tad under 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz cups, the Keurig K75 offers you control and adaptability. The drip tray, as you would expect, can be removed to accommodate a travel mug when required.

You can also control the brew temperature, thanks to the Quiet Brew Technology® of Keurig. And the Auto On/Off Energy Savings Mode means you won't be paying over the odds for the power consumption.

If you use a separate water filter such as a Brita then you have the option of removing the K75's water filter if you prefer, or the period between replacements can be extended. The purer the water you use then, generally, the longer your coffee maker will last.

But here's a tip. Don't skimp on renewing the filters. You can't make the supplied water filter last forever by filtering your water separately before filtering it again in the reservoir. Over time, the charcoal in the filter will break down (not a design fault - just the laws of physics) and you may find little grains of it get into your coffee. Perfectly harmless, but it may affect the taste.

And here's another one. If you find your K75 scales up too quickly then try using distilled water and marvel at the difference. Thanks to one of Amazon's reviewers for that one.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Suitable for home or office; massive 72-oz water reservoir; travel mug option; brew temperature control; auto on-off.

Cons: Filters need replacing regularly if you want to preserve the taste (or you could use filtered water to extend their life).

Customer Ratings

This product scores an average of well over 4 stars from around 1,340 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing, which is exceptionally good. The immediately noticeable trend is that the vast bulk of coffee maker reviews give a full five stars.

Many reviewers enthuse about the K75's good looks, speed, and ease of use. Some negative reviewers have picked up on the fact that it apparently only heats to 170 degrees and not 192, the recommended temperature for coffee. But there is some uncertainty as to whether they are measuring the temperature of the coffee once it has settled in the cup, or that of the top of the stream coming out of the unit (which is the correct place to measure from). So don't be put off too easily by people who may be using the wrong criteria to judge the product.

Keurig is a name associated with high-quality coffeemakers, and the K75 Single-Cup Home-Brewing System is at the high end of its price range because it is one of their best and most reliable machines.

This coffeemaker has thousands of fans and the overall rate of satisfaction is very high. I have no difficulty in recommending the Keurig K75 Coffee Maker (Single-Cup Home-Brewing System).

Bonavita BV1800TH 8-Cup Coffee Maker Review

The Bonavita BV1800TH 8-Cup Coffee Maker is a proven design, having been sold in Europe for many years under the Melitta label. Bonavita is a German company, so it should be no great surprise that this product is of a sufficient standard to be endorsed by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

It is at the upper end of the price scale for coffee makers, but when you look at the specifications then you'll know why.

Note: Sadly, this product has now been discontinued. You may still be able to purchase it, though probably only as second-user, which is why this review has been left in place.

The Bonavita BV1800TH - Precisely Engineered for Temperature, Speed, and Saturation

The Bonavita BV1800 comes with a massive 1400W thermal block heater which gives the power to produce eight 5 oz cups full of flavor in just 5-6 minutes. That's the fastest time compatible with getting the maximum flavor from the grinds. Naturally, the higher quality the grinds you use, the better the taste.

You can make smaller quantities, say three cups, with no loss of flavor, and in just 3 minutes or so.

The BV1800TH heats the water to precisely the right temperature for maximum flavor retention. Then the glass lined stainless steel thermal carafe, which has a well-designed lid that screws on, keeps the coffee sealed, and warmer for longer.

Some reviewers (see below) recommend the glass carafe. They maintain that it, too, keeps the temperature of the coffee high for lengthy periods. Certainly just as well as its stainless steel counterpart. That's probably because the glass carafe model has a hot plate to keep the coffee warm. The stainless steel carafe model does not.

The Bonavita BV1800TH uses a "shower head" method to let the water reach all the grinds. This enables it to bring out the optimum flavor. The filter system prevents any water from slipping past directly into the cup.

Simple Yet Elegant Design

This model is very popular with reviewers on account of the design, which avoids anything superfluous. It simply brews the coffee, delivers it at exactly the right temperature, keeps the unused coffee fresh and hot for an extensive period, and auto shuts off if not used again.

You can also pour from the carafe with just one hand if necessary - something seldom possible with other coffee makers.

And finally, its footprint is small, so you can stow it away easily when not in use.

Consumer Ratings

The Bonavita BV1800TH 8-Cup Coffee Maker has a rating of just under 4 from over 3,260 reviews at the time of writing (May 2019). Well over half the reviews give the full 5 stars.

Some reviewers have left negative, 1-star reviews because the stainless steel carafe (which looks very sturdy) exploded (or imploded), usually when left to dry after washing. A pity, because, otherwise, they seem to have been very pleased with the product. The solution to this seems to be to order the glass carafe. This is cheaper anyway and not prone to this defect.

Other reviewers liked the simplicity of design and the fact that there are no unnecessary control knobs or buttons. They like how it is well made and easy to clean. Also, the product's ability to brew at precisely the right temperature, and to drip the water onto the grounds evenly, via the "shower head", thereby ensuring a very even extraction of the flavor, is given great importance.

Bonavita BV1800Summary

A product's quality is often reflected in the length of the manufacturer's warranty. The Bonavita BV1800TH 8-Cup Coffee Maker has an unconditional two-year warranty, which is a sign of the confidence Bonavita have in it.

Keurig K65 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System Review

The Keurig K65 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System now has limited availability. This review was originally written when it was easily available. The replacement is the Keurig K55, which is reviewed on this link. In case the K65 is still of interest to anyone, here is my review.

The K65 includes a water filter kit and is about $90 more expensive than the K45. For this you get an LCD readout that displays a Ready to Brew indicator and the time, plus other information.

The water reservoir is larger, at 60 ounces (about eight cups). This makes for fewer refills, so it would fit in well where you have a larger family.

In black with chrome accents, this home brewer will enhance any kitchen. It's capable of satisfying all your hot and cold drink needs quickly and reliably.

The Keurig K65 - Total Control

Not only do you have a choice of three cup sizes, but you have the ability to adjust the brew temperature to your exact liking as well (a feature not available with the K45 model). You can adjust the strength of your coffee by making use of the variety of blends and cup sizes, so putting a strong brew in a larger cup or travel mug can tone it down, or using a small (6 oz) cup can strengthen a weaker mix.

And, of course, you don't have to use the K-Cup brand. Other brands are accepted just as readily.

There's an alert when the machine needs descalling, and you can remove the drip tray for cleaning or in order to fill a travel mug.

When starting from cold it takes around a minute to produce a cup of your favorite hot or cold drink. This reduces to anything from 15 to 45 seconds later on, depending on how frequently you order a fresh cup.

A Water Filter Kit and Bonus Variety Box

Much of the wear and tear on a coffee maker is down to the impurities in the water used, so if you can filter these out before they can do any damage then it's all to the good. Some folks even filter the water twice - once in a Brita or similar filter and a second time in the coffee maker itself if it has this facility, which the K65 does. And the chances are that their coffee makers generally last longer and need descaling less often.

The Bonus K-Cup Variety Box has twelve assorted brews to get you started and help you determine your favorites.

Keurig K65 Features and Specifications:

  • Programmable
  • Choice of 3 cup sizes (6 oz., 8 oz. and 10 oz.)
  • Removable 60 oz. water reservoir
  • Quiet Brew Technology®
  • Energy Savings Mode – Auto On/Off
  • Includes water filter handle and 1 charcoal filter
  • 30 Day Money Back Guarantee
  • UL Listed: Household use only
  • Power: 1,500 Watts
  • Voltage: 120VAC / 60Hz
  • Weight: 12 lbs. empty
  • Dimensions: 13.0"H x 9.8"W x 13.3"D

Consumer Ratings

This product scores an average of well over 4 out of 5 from over 3,600 reviews on Amazon, at the time of writing (May 2019). Reading through them, it seems most people are either passionate fans or skeptical critics, with the former very much outnumbering the latter.

What the fans like most about the K65 is that you can make just one cup of coffee at a time, and can choose between three different sizes of cup. Having a choice between coffee, tea, hot chocolate and even iced coffee is also popular.

The critics mostly dislike the fact that the unit tends to last only about three years, but then that's actually not bad for a machine dealing constantly with hot to boiling water, and used all day every day. One or two have ceased to work before that time, but Keurig do have a 12 month warranty which they are prepared to honor when the occasion arises.

The reviews overwhelmingly show that most buyers of the Keurig K65 are very happy with their coffee maker. Most criticisms relate to its durability and difficulties in cleaning it, but these factors haven't deterred the vast majority of reviewers, who love its ease of use, style and versatility.
