Keurig K Compact Coffee Maker Review

The Keurig K Compact coffee maker has been on the market for a comparatively short time. But that hasn't stopped it from acquiring an enviable reputation for speed and quality of brew. It's unpretentious, with simple controls. It's probably the cheapest Keurig on the market, and certainly the smallest. And it's available only in black. So how much of a chance would you be taking on purchasing this?

Does Compact Mean Easy to Use?

We know the Keurig K Compact is, well, compact. Does that mean you need small hands to use it? Actually, no.

Keurig have made this coffee maker extremely easy to operate, even for those of us with normal sized hands. The auto-off facility enables you to have the machine on all the time. You know that it will switch itself off if unused for 2 hours, to save energy. In the meantime you can simply insert a pod at any time and start the brew process. You just press one of the three cup size buttons - 6, 8 or 10 ounces. Viola! Your brew will be ready in less than a minute.

Naturally the compact size of the unit limits the size of the water reservoir. But you can still get three regular sized cups of coffee from one refill. That's also enough to fill any travel mug. You just remove the drip tray to fit any mug up to 7-inches tall.

The reservoir easily removes for refilling, and slots back into place. It fits neatly at the rear of the brewer, for compactness. And if you did forget to put your mug in position the drip tray can hold a full brew. That can be invaluable in avoiding a messy problem when you should be enjoying your coffee.

The Importance of K-Cup Pods

There's one rather important thing to bear in mind when considering the Keurig K Compact. And that is that it only takes regular K-Cup pods. Not K-Cups, not K-Mugs and not K-Carafe pods. Some users who haven't appreciated the difference, and have used non-compatible pods, have had unfortunate results. And some of them have posted unfavorable reviews, unaware of their error.

K-Cup pods do, of course, give you a wide variety of coffees and flavors to choose from. They also produce less waste and are therefore more environmentally friendly. But if you feel restricted in choice, or that their prices are too high, then all is not lost. You can use a reusable K-Cup pod with your own choice of coffee grounds in it.

One thing the Keurig K Compact does not have is a K-Cup reader. If you know what this is you'll agree you're better off without it. Keurig K2.0 coffee makers have this little devil, which, although it can be by-passed, is there to force you to use only Keurig's K-Cup pods. No such limitations here, fortunately.

Who is the Keurig K Compact Coffee Maker Made For?

At a price that's usually below $75 on Amazon.com, and as a small device, the Keurig K Compact does have its limitations. These restrict the type of person for whom it is best suited. If you live alone or with just one other person then it's ideal. And if your kitchen work top space is limited then you'll like it.

If you want all the taste and speed of a Keurig coffee maker and don't mind fewer bells and whistles. Or if you just want a quick cup of coffee when you want it, without being a connoisseur. As long as you don't mind being restricted to K-Cup pods (including a reusable pod). If any or all these things apply to you then the K-Compact deserves serious consideration.

Consumer Ratings for the Keurig K Compact

At the time of writing (May 2019) the Keurig K Compact coffee maker has over 230 reviews on the Keurig.com site. These give an average of around 4.0 out of 5 stars. On Amazon.com there are nearly 50 reviews as it has been sold there for less than two years. The average score is nearly 4.5.

The most popular features are that it doesn't take up very much space and that it's very fast in delivering delicious coffee. Having Keurig stylish good looks is also widely appreciated.

Some reviewers have complained about a smell and taste of plastic in their coffee. It may be that there are some items that come out of the factory with this problem. These are evidently few and far between. But if you were to find that your item produces objectionable smells or tastes then you have a simple remedy. Simply return it to the seller for replacement.

It's likely, however, that most people experiencing this problem aren't aware of how to clean a coffee maker properly. Before you use any coffee maker it's wise to rinse it through a few times. Use a mixture of white vinegar and water.

Others have been using the wrong pods. The pods, being made of plastic, are sensitive to excessive heat. If they are placed in the wrong machine then they may overheat, producing the unpleasant smell or odor.

Summary

This Keurig K Compact coffee maker review has covered all the factors that you should know when deciding whether to buy. The main thing to bear in mind is that it is a small and rather basic coffee maker. It has no water filter or auto timer (other than the auto-off). You're restricted to K-Cup pods (though you can use a reusable pod) and to three set cup sizes. And you can't control the water temperature, as you can with more expensive coffee makers.

But remember that you're getting a stylish Keurig coffee maker at a very reasonable price. It brews in less than a minute and has a simple control panel that anyone can master in minutes. The 36-oz water reservoir and the drip tray are easily removed, and you can use a 7" tall travel mug. You can dispense hot water only, when you need to, and the whole item is easily cleaned.

If you're looking for a coffee maker to serve one or two coffee drinkers then it's hard to fault the Keurig K Compact.

Nespresso Essenza Mini Review

The Nespresso Essenza Mini Espresso Machine is made by De’Longhi, who also own the Kenwood and Braun brands.

The Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine is made by De'Longhi, who also own the Kenwood and Braun brands. In producing this machine they have catered for those of us who want to enjoy full-flavored barista-style espressos. But also without the cost, learning curve and lost work top space that go with a regular espresso machine.

Was this too ambitious an endeavor? Or have they managed to pull it off?

A Small Machine with a Big Punch

With the separate milk frother these are two machines but, even so, the smallness of each of them is remarkable. You can fit this combination on any kitchen work top no matter how crowded it may already be. Being small and light in weight, they are also portable. Some people have used them for taking on trips away from home, e.g. boating holidays.

But hidden behind its stylish looks, the espresso machine packs a powerful 19-bar high pressure pump. This gives it the qualities, abilities and speed of a much higher-priced product.

The compact size inevitably brings a couple of downsides. The water reservoir, at 0.6 of a liter capacity, needs regular re-filling. And the capsule bin, with a maximum capacity of 6 capsules, needs regular emptying. But you still get fifteen espressos or five lungos and an espresso from one tankful.

Speed and Versatility of the Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine

Nespresso boast that your water reaches the ideal temperature in less than 30 seconds of selecting the size of cup. That's how you switch it on, by the way. In a few more seconds your espresso is ready. The Aeroccino 3 milk frother is equally fast.

The Nespresso Essenza mini coffee machine gives a choice of espresso or lungo in size of brew. You can also use it to simply make hot water for tea, if you like that sort of thing. But the milk frother has its versatility too. As well as regular milk, it can froth almond or coconut milk, and even chocolate milk. You can also choose between frothing or steaming your milk, by adjusting the disk and coil inside. And it makes cold froth too.

You don't have to stay with the Nespresso capsules. These are smaller than the popular K-pods, but even so you can get alternatives that are cheaper. You can even get refillable pods.

If the standard sizes of espresso (40ml) and lungo (110ml) aren't to your liking, you can re-program the machine. Just continue pressing the appropriate button when filling your cup until it reaches the desired level. The machine will remember that measurement for all future brews until it's re-set again.

What You Can and Can't do with the Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine

Like all coffee makers and espresso machines, the Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine does have its limitations. It's a single serve device, so bear that in mind if you're looking for a high volume espresso machine. One that can satisfy the needs of a large crowd in a short period of time. You'd be better off with, for example, a Mr Coffee Barista Espresso Maker.

You can only make espressos and coffee using capsules of the correct size. You can't use loose grinds. And you may find that you have to remove the drip base to fit your mug in its allotted place. That is if it's anything larger than a standard sized espresso cup.

Most users find that these caveats are very minor inconveniences compared to all the benefits they get from this product.

Ease of Use and Cleaning

This mini espresso machine must be one of the easiest of such machines to operate. To start with, the water reservoir comes away for filling really easily. You just lift the lid on its hinge with your fingertip and pull it away. Lift the lever on the top of the machine and drop the capsule in. Commence brewing by pressing the 'espresso' or 'lungo' button, which flashes as the Essenza starts to heat the water.

There's a useful energy-saving feature - if the machine remains unused for 3 minutes it goes into eco-mode, using less energy. And after 9 minutes it switches off completely. This latter setting can be toggled with 30 minutes to suit your requirements. And there's no need to remember which setting you have used. The espresso button single-blinks on a 9-minute setting, and double-blinks on a 30-minute setting.

As for cleaning, there's little to worry about. Just rinse out the frother each time after you use it, including the disk and coil. The espresso machine only needs wiping down occasionally, and a periodic de-scaling. Full instructions are in the Owner's Manual. Here's a link to some useful tips on how to clean a coffee maker.

Consumer Ratings

There are a number of things that reviewers on Amazon.com like about the Nespresso Essenza. The compactness of the size, the sturdiness of the build and the ease of use and cleaning. These are major talking points, as are the quality of the espresso and the crema, especially among the men. The ladies also love how cute it looks and how much fun it is to use. And everyone appreciates the value for money in buying this duo. The Aeroccino 3 milk frother, if sold separately, costs around $100.

There are one or two points of criticism. The lack of an on/off switch on the espresso machine can be confusing. But people soon get used to just pressing the espresso or lungo buttons to start their brew. Some users have commented that the water reservoir tends to leak. This is probably because some care is required in slotting the reservoir back into place properly after filling with water. So just watch that point.

The price of the pods is another issue. But you don't have to stay with Nespresso's own pods, as we've already discussed.

More than four out of every five reviewers have awarded the Nespresso Essenza a full five stars on Amazon.com. The average score is well over 4.5 from over 190 reviewers at the time of writing (June 2019).

Summary

The Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine with Aeroccino 3 Milk Frother, as a combination, is difficult to fault. Or you don't want to have to learn how to use all the bells and whistles….. Then this is the answer for you.

Secura French Press Review

What if you could find a coffee maker that can produce rich, smooth coffee exactly as you like it? And be built solidly of stainless steel with nothing to break, rot or perish? And be easy to use and clean. And, of course, be priced so as to be within easy reach of anyone's budget?

A tough call? Then let me tell you about the 1500ML Secura French press coffee maker.

Total Control with Simplicity

The great thing about a French press is that you have total control over the strength and richness of the coffee you drink. If you like strong coffee then you can increase the ratio of coffee grinds to water. For a richer taste you can vary the time you steep for. Experiment until you have the balance right.

As long as your coffee grinds are of good quality then you'll easily produce richer coffee than with, for example, a drip type coffee maker costing three or four times as much.

As for simplicity, there's no control panel and no buttons to press. Just your own judgement to use.

So much for French presses in general. But what about the 1500ML Secura French press? Let's see what you can expect from it.

What's The Build Quality of the Secura French Press?

The main material it's made from is 18/10 stainless steel. That's top quality steel. Virtually unbreakable. There isn't any plastic or rubber to wear out or perish. And in case you're concerned about it, there's no BPA (even though it is made in China). It has a stainless steel double-wall body which gives it a superior thermal ability compared to glass or ceramics. So your coffee will stay hot for longer.

The Secura French Press has a layered filter system that is also made of stainless steel. The layering has three filters and is cleverly designed to make it easy to produce coffee with a smooth, full-bodied flavor. It will catch even the smallest coffee grinds and prevent them from ending up in your cup. The filters won't wear out or become discolored (as long as you clean them periodically). The only reason you'd want to order replacements is if you lose or accidentally damage the originals.

The handle, too, is of 18/10 stainless steel. Although it's attached to the outer layer only of the body, it's secure and can easily handle the weight of 50 ounces of liquid. It's also cool to the touch (as is the knob right at the top), even when the contents of the coffee maker are at their hottest. So no scalded fingers.

One weak point of French presses generally is that heat can escape from where the lid joins the body on account of the seal being less than perfect. The seal on this French press is very snug and will play its part in keeping your coffee hot for at least an hour. Probably an hour and a half, depending on the ambient temperature. And you can rotate the lid to stop heat escaping via the spout so as to keep your coffee hot for even longer.

Is the 1500ML Secura French Press Easy to Use?

Generally speaking, French presses are easy to use. All you do is place the coffee grinds in the receptacle, pour the hot water in and (perhaps after a short delay, depending on your own particular method) press the plunger down.

Sometimes the plunger can stick or cause the coffee to spill over onto your work surface. In my research I found no evidence that either of these difficulties were a problem for users of this Secura French press.

The pour spout is about 1.5 inches wide at its opening, which is ideal for easy pouring. And you can brew exactly the amount of coffee that you want. With this French press, you can brew from one cup right up to four or five cups. It just depends on whether you take milk or not. It's really difficult to think of anything about this press that is anything other than user friendly. Some users take it camping with them, and that speaks for itself.

Is It Easy To Clean?

This is where so many coffee makers, not just French presses, that are great products in all other respects, fall down. Not with this press. The instructions are very simple. Everything can be taken apart for cleaning very easily. There are no electrical connections and everything is stainless steel. The whole item is dishwasher safe.

All the same, here is a link to a post explaining how to clean a coffee maker easily and effectively.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Stainless steel construction - nothing to wear out or perish
  • 3-layer filter system means smooth, rich coffee
  • Plunger works smoothly - no mess
  • Double walled insulation so your coffee stays hot for up to one and a half hours
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons:

  • The filters can sometimes trap grounds between layers, so watch out for that when cleaning
  • The nut on the threaded stem of the filter can become loose if not tightened periodically

Consumer Ratings for the 1500ML Secura French Press

If you read the reviews on Amazon.com you'll find one five-star rating after another. Users of this French press overwhelmingly love it and have nothing but kind words for it.

Probably the most popular feature is the stainless steel construction. That, together with the double-wall insulation, means your coffee is kept hot for longer than with any comparable press. Having the ability to produce rich, full flavored coffee exactly to individual taste. That's another thing that users love about the 1500ML Secura French press.

You'll find one or two minor issues mentioned if you look long enough. Such as the filters sometimes trapping grinds between layers, making it more difficult than it should be to clean them. But such instances don't stop this French press from boasting an average score of well over 4.5 from over 700 reviews. Nearly 90 per cent of reviewers have awarded the full five stars.

secura french press
The 1500ML Secura French Press Filter System

Summary

Don't let the low price deceive you. Probably some potential purchasers of this Secura French press overlook it on account of just that. Which is a pity, because it produces delicious coffee exactly to individual taste. It will outlast similar presses on account of its solid, stainless steel build. And it's easy to use and clean.

The simple but effective filter system, though sometimes requiring a little more care than usual, produces exceptionally smooth coffee. Coffee of a smoothness and richness that you'll only find in other coffee makers costing several times more.

The 1500ML Secura French press is a modestly priced French press that packs one powerful punch. It's extremely difficult to find anything bad to say about it. We have no hesitation in giving this coffee maker our full recommendation.

BUNN-O-MATIC Coffee Maker CSB1 Review

This BUNN-O-MATIC Coffee Maker (CSB1 Speed Brew) review relates to the replacement model for the very successful BUNN GRB Velocity Brew. Our review of that product can be found by clicking here.

BUNN boast that their BUNN-O-MATIC brews superb tasting coffee in less than half the time of other top-selling home coffee makers. Not only that, but that their drip-free carafe delivers the cleanest pour on the market.

How do these claims measure up? Read the rest of the review below to find out:

Speed and Taste

Everything that the BUNN GRB Velocity Brew had, the BUNN-O-MATIC has, and that includes speed and taste. How often do you find that a good coffee maker that brews quickly lacks something in the taste department? Or that a coffee maker that produces superb tasting coffee takes rather a long time to brew?

Combining speed and taste is the Holy Grail of coffee makers, and this coffee maker does just that. It brews anything from 20-oz for a travel mug to 50-oz for a full carafe in only four minutes. BUNN call 50-oz a 10-cup size, which may be stretching things a little if you like anything more than a 5-oz mug, but their taste and speed claims are hard to rebut.

The BUNN-O-MATIC Is Not For Occasional Use

There's one very important point about the BUNN-O-MATIC that anyone considering it for their next coffee maker should ponder. This product is heavy duty. It's made to produce several pots of coffee each day. It needs to be left on for long periods at a time. This is so the water in the stainless steel tank can be kept hot and ready for use at a moment's notice, and the coffee in the carafe can be kept warm on the warming plate.

If you use it for making the occasional cup then, like many high-tech instruments that are under-used, this BUNN coffee maker is not very happy. You'd be better off with a single-cup coffee maker such as the BUNN MCU Single Cup coffee brewer. In addition, if it's switched on and off throughout the day then its performance will suffer.

Check out these useful tips on how to use a coffee maker.

The BUNN-O-MATIC is ideal for small to medium sized family groups that love coffee, or for small offices where the demand for coffee is maintained throughout the day.

Not a "Plug and Play"

You do need to take some trouble when you first set up the BUNN-O-MATIC in your kitchen. Reading the user manual and carrying out the preliminaries really will save time and trouble in the years ahead.

For example, you need to fill the water tank before you plug in to the mains. If you read the reviews on Amazon you'll be even better prepared. You can read how some users use only filtered water so as to keep the interior of their BUNN-O-MATIC clean as well as to make their coffee taste even better.

Others acknowledge its ability to produce superb tasting coffee, but don't like how it has to be allowed to heat up before it can brew their coffee. This time lapse is because of the job it does in heating large amounts of water and is down to the laws of physics, rather than a defect with the product.

Those who obey the rule book and take a little extra trouble in learning how to use it will have both great tasting coffee and a machine that will give years of good service.

Pros and Cons of the BUNN-O-MATIC

Pros:

  • Brews 50-oz carafe in 4 minutes
  • Hot coffee on demand
  • Drip-free carafe pouring spout, so no mess
  • Maximum flavor extraction via unique spray head
  • Sturdy build and pleasing design to suit any kitchen

Cons:

  • No auto shutoff, so be careful to switch off when leaving for an extended time
  • The warming plate indicator light is hard to see in bright light
  • The glass container can be difficult to clean
  • You need Bunn's special coffee filters and to use filtered water for best results

At the present time (May 2019) there is no decent YouTube Video of the BUNN-O-MATIC being tested. As soon as I find such a video I will post a link here.

Consumer Ratings

In the reviews there is some criticism of the warming plate indicator light. This shows as a faint blue that some find difficult to see in daylight or when artificial lighting is on. That aside, there is a high level of satisfaction with this coffee maker. The main reasons are the superb tasting coffee it produces, its slim design, and the speed at which it brews.

The BUNN-O-MATIC scores well over 4 out of 5 stars from around 100 customer reviews on Amazon.com at the time of writing (May 2019). Over three quarters of reviewers award either four or five stars.

Summary

As long as your rate of coffee consumption is high, whether as a family or as an office group, then the BUNN-O-MATIC is an ideal coffee maker for you. If you're prepared to take a little trouble to follow the instructions and use filtered water then you should find it to be a most satisfactory purchase. We can highly recommend the BUNN-O-MATIC as a great coffee maker.

Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT Review

The Zojirushi 586361-CV-DCC40XT VE Hybrid Water Boiler And Warmer, to give this product its full name, is the replacement product for the incredibly successful CV-DSC40 VE.

Both of these products give you the convenience of instant hot water of a pre-determined temperature at the touch of a button. Invaluable if you enjoy drinking specialist teas, and extremely useful if you are a regular coffee drinker.

So why did Zojirushi decide to produce a replacement for their original water boiler and warmer?

What Distinguishes The Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT From The CV-DSC40?

This products predecessor, the Zojirushi CV-DSC40, was incredibly popular. It still is if you can get hold of one. However, there was one thing about it, in common with nearly every other water boiler on the market, that many reviewers disliked. And Zojirushi listened.

In order to produce water at a set temperature, the CV-DSC40 always boils it first. That in itself doesn't take long. But it does take a while for the water to cool down to the set temperature. If that was set at anything less than the maximum of 208 degrees then it could be quite a long time.

The Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT overcomes that problem. Its Quick Temp mode enables it to heat up water to the desired temperature without boiling it first. This can save an incredible 6 hours if you're heating water to 160 degrees, for example to make some delicate Japanese tea. Even if you're heating it to 195 degrees you'll save up to an impressive one and a half hours (depending on the ambient temperature).

This setting also saves energy consumption (and therefore money as well) and cuts down on the emission of steam. There are circumstances where you may want to boil your water before consuming it. These include where you are feeding a baby or where de-chlorination of the water is necessary. Even here you can still use Quick Temp if your water is bottled or purified.

Just one other thing to mention here. The CV-DCC40XT is available in capacities of 4 liters and 5 liters. 4 liters is ample for most users, but if you anticipate heavy usage, eg in an office, then the larger size is for you.

Is The Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT Really So Much Better Than A Kettle?

The point about a water boiler and warmer like the Zojirushi CV-DCC40XT is that you have a supply of water of a pre-determined temperature on demand. And there is a digital readout showing the actual temperature of the water available in real time.

A kettle can't do that. All it does is heat water up until it's boiled, unless you switch it off beforehand, but if you do that you can't know what the temperature is. The DCC40XT's pre-set temperature options reflect the demands of tea and coffee drinkers. Tea drinkers will probably outnumber coffee drinkers in using this product to its full potential, but there's a strong argument for saying that everyone needs a water boiler and warmer in their kitchen.

The temperature options themselves are 160, 175, 195 and 208 degrees (and there is a straight boil setting). 160 is for high quality, delicate green teas, 175 is for various green teas, such as bancha, houjicha, or genmaicha, 195 is for oolong tea and white teas. Coffee drinkers will invariably use the 208 setting, also suitable for black, herbal and pu-erh tea and instant noodles. This latter setting can reduce energy consumption by up to 28% compared to boiling water and then letting it cool to 208.

Even the power cord is made so as to detach from the body very easily - rather that than risk you catching or tripping over it and sending the machine, hot water and all, flying. Auto-shutoff kicks in with the "HH" setting if there's any danger of accidental damage, eg through the water level being too low. The Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT really is so much more than just a kettle.

What Exactly Is A "Hybrid" Water Boiler and Dispenser?

It's easy to be blinded by science when reading the manufacturer's description of this product. Let's just take a minute to go over what the various terms mean.

The "VE" in the full title of the CV-DSS40XT refers to "Vacuum-Electric". This is the "vacuum insulation technology", another term that, together with "hybrid keep warm system" and "Vacuum Insulated Non-Electric Keep Warm", will mean very little to most people.

It's quite simple - they all refer to using both electricity and vacuum insulation to heat the water and then keep it warm for extensive periods. Zojirushi have used a stainless steel double insulation wall, including a layer of vacuum insulation, to keep the water hot with very little power consumption. In itself it's no more complicated than the technology behind a vacuum flask.

The practical benefits are that this product can rapidly heat water to a pre-determined temperature with precision, and keep it at that temperature for as long as you want. Without relying completely on electricity, and all at the touch of a button.

What About Early-Morning Brews?

It's all very well having water at a constant temperature any time you want it, but how long does it take to get there? That's assuming you don't want to spend money keeping your water warm all night as well as all day. After all, any water boiler and warmer has to heat the water to above the desired temperature and allow it to cool. This is in order to ensure that all the water in the tank is heated to the same temperature.

The answer to that little problem is in the "Energy Saving Timer Function". This is a setting whereby you can shut off power to the heater, for example overnight, and have it come on again. This timer can be set for every hour between 6 and 10 hours from the time you set it. So you can set it before you retire for the night, and have it come on an hour or so before you rise. Your water will be at the required temperature as soon as you're ready for your morning brew.

How Often Do I Have To Clean and Maintain It?

As with any technological product, it's important to fully read and understand the User's Manual (downloadable from the manufacturer's site or from Amazon). This can save you no end of time and frustration by avoiding problems later on.

The Zojirushi Water Boilere CV-DCC40XT is very easy to clean. It has a clear-coated stainless steel body which just wipes clean with a damp cloth. The inside of the water tank is of a non-stick coating made of PTFE, which is a fluoropolymer, a material commonly used for nonstick coating in cookware for conventional kitchen use. It will need a clean every couple of months or so, depending on usage. You do this by simply putting a couple of tablespoons of citric acid in the full tank of water and boiling it.

Consumer Ratings for the Zojirushi Water Boiler CV-DCC40XT

There is a very high level of satisfaction with this product among reviewers. On Amazon.com over 500 reviewers have awarded an average of over 4.5 stars, as at the time of writing (May 2019). Especially popular is the Quick Temp setting that allows the unit to heat your water up to the desired temperature and then stop.

Another feature that saves energy and is very popular is the vacuum layer, which means that the product uses less energy keeping your water warm.

Durability, convenience and the ability to choose between different temperatures plus boil are other factors that have led to this high rating.

Some reviewers have complained about worn down Teflon or other deposits forming on the bottom of their water boiler. It's not Teflon (which is stable up to around 600 F - far above the temperature to which the DCC40XT can heat) or anything else harmful, but simply mineral deposits from the water. These can be dissolved and washed away with the use of citric acid, as mentioned above.

Summary

Zojirushi are renowned for the quality of their products, and the CV-DCC40XT is no exception. In this product they've combined great style with rugged durability and overcome the only major complaint about its predecessor, thanks to its Quick Temp setting.

Whilst tea-drinkers may arguably get more benefit from having this product on their kitchen work tops, coffee drinkers, too, will benefit from the convenience of having water of exactly the required temperature readily available at the touch of a button.

And once you've bought your Zojirushi water boiler CV-DCC40XT you can be pretty sure you won't have to replace it for many years.

The Keurig K-Elite single serve coffee maker is a single-serve machine that Keurig introduced to replace the K575. They wanted to modernise the style but keep the solid build. A product that had little to go wrong and yet provided all the tools that a serious coffee drinker might need. And at a reasonable price.

They've kept the price down by not making it Keurig 2.0 and forgoing a touch screen. Was this a wise move? And does the K-Elite prove itself to be an adequate replacement for the K575?

Keurig K-Elite Coffee Maker Build Quality - Beyond The Hype

Keurig boast that this K-Elite coffee maker has (among other things) a "striking brushed finish and metal details". With a price nearer to $200 than $100 you would expect a better build quality than some of the cheaper Keurig models, and in fairness it seems Keurig do deliver on this.

Metal components instead of plastic means a more robust machine and few if any breakages. The lack of a touch screen is probably a good thing in this price range. They are all right if you are prepared to pay for them, but notorious for going wrong if they are not of top quality.

This coffee maker has sturdy buttons that are easily accessible, and a digital readout. It's programmable, so you can set it to switch on in the morning, saving you a minute or two, and saving on energy consumption. But it won't brew without manual input from you.

The K-Elite not being a 2.0, you can use any brand K-Cup you like, or brew your own ground coffee using the Universal My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter (sold separately). A charcoal water filter is included but be careful not to throw it away with the packaging as it's not all that noticeable. All in all, Keurig have concentrated on producing a quality machine that doesn't promise anything it can't deliver.

Is The Design Really An Improvement?

With the design, Keurig wanted something that would look at home with all the other stainless appliances in your kitchen. They've managed to keep the size compact and yet inclusive of a large 75-oz water reservoir. This is smaller than the 80-oz you get with the K575, but it does heat up more quickly. Like most modern Keurigs, it lives at the side of the machine. Keurig have made it opaque to fit in with the rest of the design, which means you can't easily see how much water is in it. But the light that comes on automatically when you power up helps offset this drawback.

The Strong and Hot Water buttons sit at the top of the control panel, above the iced option and the cup size selection buttons and below the digital clock and settings buttons. There are five cup sizes to choose from, between 4 and 12 oz. It's very easy to work, and when you lift the handle the pod holder comes out at a convenient angle to make it easy to insert or remove your pod.

Those Buttons

The Strong button is a necessity if you tend to use the larger size brews, as otherwise you may find yourself presented with weak coffee. The Hot Water button is next to it. Use it for a quick clean (see below) and if you regularly make instant oat meal, for example, or even hot tea (surely not!:). The Iced button is probably unnecessary, given that you have a Hot Water button that performs exactly the same function.

So it's difficult to say if the design is an improvement or not. There may be a little overall, but everyone will have their own opinion. One thing's for sure - it's unmistakably a Keurig, and that means a pleasing yet practical design.

Ease of Use of the Keurig K-Elite Coffee Maker

The Keurig K-Elite is undoubtedly very easy to use. The controls are intuitive. You insert your pod, press the Strong button if you want extra strong, and press the cup size. If you just want hot water or are making iced coffee then you press the appropriate button and then the cup size. Close the lid and the machine brews your choice within around one minute - the optimal time for ensuring you get all the flavor from the pod.

Cleaning is equally easy, using the Hot Water button. The drip tray is removable for cleaning (or if you wish to fill a travel mug up to 7.2 inches high). Changing the filter and descaling should be done every couple of months, depending on usage. You can read elsewhere on this site how to clean a coffee maker.

Advanced Features

Using the Settings button on the control panel, you can program this coffee maker to produce precisely the brews you like. The temperature control lets you set the brew temperature to between 187 and 192 degrees F. Most coffee lovers will prefer the higher end of that scale in order to extract the most flavor from the coffee.

There's also a high-altitude brew setting in case you live up in the mountains. This allows the K-Elite to function at up to 10,000 feet above sea level. If this applies to you then it would be advisable to set the brew temperature at a lower level to start with until you are familiar with how this particular setting works.

The Keurig K-Elite is rated at an average of nearly 4.5 stars from over 1,130 reviews on Amazon at the time of writing (March 2019). Well over 80 per cent of reviewers award four or five stars.

What users love best about this product is its solid build, the large water reservoir, the maximum brew size of 12-oz, and that you have a wide choice of brews to choose from when you use the Universal My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter (sold separately).

The Keurig K Select Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker, to give its full name, is a replacement model for the very successful Keurig K-250. That latter model was brought out some years ago to meet the demand for a single-serve coffeemaker with a smaller footprint.

Very often such a move is fraught with danger in that many fans of the original product will make unfavorable comparisons with it when giving their views of the new coffee maker. Is that the case with the K Select? Read the review below to find out.

The Keurig K Select's Push-Button Strong Brew

I want to mention the K Select's Strong Brew feature before anything else because it's so simple and yet so effective. A major drawback of so many coffee makers that are otherwise extremely versatile and simple to operate is that the brew they produce lacks strength. Keurig have taken note of this concern of so many coffee lovers and incorporated a simple solution.

So when you feel like a stronger brew (which, if you're anything like me, is most of the time) the "Strong" button is there for the pressing, right next to the 12-oz mug size selector button. Press it prior to selecting the size. This causes the machine to slow the rate that the water flows through the pod, causing more flavor to be captured.

Does this give you a great tasting mug of coffee, bold, strong and intense? It's hard to find anyone who says otherwise.

What About Value For Money?

The Keurig K Select is available in six colors. It comes in at around $99 to $165 (but over $350 for the Vintage Red) at the time of writing (May 2019), depending on which color you select. This is a good price for a single-serve pod coffee maker that has extreme ease of use combined with versatility, reliability and speed. Does the K Select have all of these? Let's see.

Is The Keurig K Select Coffee Maker Easy To Use?

A glance at the top of this machine will give you the answer. This is not a digital machine, so there's no learning curve to speak of. Just buttons. You put your mug or cup or carafe in place, and your selected pod into the top of the machine, pressing the lid firmly down.

As mentioned above, if you want a strong brew then press the button for it. Then there are four size-of-brew buttons to choose from - 6-oz, 8-oz, 10-oz, and 12-oz. Just press the appropriate button. And that's about it. You'll have your brew ready in around 60-seconds.

If you want a different brew, such as hot chocolate or iced coffee, there's no problem. The scanner identifies the contents of the pod and brews accordingly. And if you have a tall travel mug (up to 7.4 inches tall) then you can remove the base plate to make room for it.

How Many Cups Before You Need A Refill?

One thing about the Keurig K Select that has bothered some users is the size of the water reservoir. Keurig claim that you can brew five cups before you need to refill, but some have questioned this, saying it's nearer to four. It depends, of course, on how large your mugs are and what size of brew you normally select. But the fact is that the reservoir can contain up to 52 oz of water, which should be enough to satisfy up to at least four people regularly using the machine. Even if you can't use all 52 oz before getting the refill signal (this is usual for coffee makers).

It's not as if refilling was difficult, though. Keurig have made it as easy as it can be. Lifting and replacing the reservoir is very easy, and you can use a jug to refill if you dislike removing it.

Some users say that the reservoir should be larger, but bear in mind that Keurig have made a quality machine at an affordable price and with the specific intent of catering for customers whose worktop space is at a premium. A larger reservoir would inevitably increase the footprint and make the machine inappropriate for many customers. If you need a larger reservoir you would be better off with the Keurig K475.

The Auto Shut-Off Anomoly

If you've read some of the reviews of the K Select then you'll probably have some concerns about how it often needs turning on before each brew. Some users have had trouble with this, including where their machine misbehaves on switch-on, for example by ejecting water prematurely.

All this is almost certainly down to a misunderstanding of the auto shut-off facility. This is set to "on" by default, and means the machine will automatically shut off after 2 hours of non-use. This is to save on power consumption where users forget to switch off for the day or before leaving their K Select for a prolonged period of time.

But it is easy to disable this feature. The User Manual, near the foot of page 2, tells you exactly how to do this. If you haven't been supplied with a printed version with your K Select then you can download a PDF version from the Amazon description page or from Keurig's web site.

Is Cleaning It As Easy As Using It?

As with any coffee maker, it's important to keep the Keurig K Select clean, but at the same time to be careful simply because complex electronic products and water have an uneasy relationship.

With the exterior, drip tray and reservoir this is easy. You can hand wash the latter two or put them in a dishwasher, and the exterior just needs an occasional wipe down with a clean cloth. Make sure you thoroughly rinse the reservoir of any soapy water for obvious reasons.

Some users have experienced problems with water spilling out onto the work surface or coffee grounds appearing in their mug. This is caused by clogging of the entrance and exit needles (through which the water pours through the pod and then into your mug or carafe) with sediment from previous brews. These items need cleaning at regular intervals by flushing through with a wash cycle.

Like other coffee makers, the K Select needs descaling every 3 - 6 months, and the built-in Brewer Maintenance Reminder issues an alert when that time is due. Read more about how to clean a coffee maker by clicking this link.

As at May 2019 the Keurig K Select scores over 4 stars from over 1,080 reviews on Amazon. Nearly three quarters of all reviewers award either four or five stars. It scores over 4 out of 5 from over 470 reviewers on Keurig's site.

Many reviewers love how easy this machine is to use and to clean. Others like the "Strong" option, and the great tasting coffee they can enjoy. The speed and the choice of brew size are also well received.

A high noise level and questionable build quality are mentioned by some reviewers, but most seem satisfied that the K Select is quiet enough, bearing in mind that it is a coffee maker and not a steam iron, and are happy with the quality of the product.

Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker Review

The Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker is a fully programmable coffee brewer for domestic use that delivers "coffee on demand". At least, that's what the main sales point is.

And it does this without using a carafe. Plus, it uses coffee grinds, not K-cups or other capsules, so it's much cheaper to operate.

It also boasts separate, removable water and coffee reservoirs that are easy to clean. And you can load the coffee reservoir with up to twelve 5-oz cups worth of grinds.

There's no deterioration of taste or temperature if you want just one to four cups. Just use the 1-4 cups setting on the control panel. Talking of taste, there's a charcoal filter that fits neatly into the water tank to filter out impurities.

So far so good. But does this popular coffee maker have any little secrets that you ought to know about?

What The Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker Does

It delivers piping hot coffee with no loss of flavor long after it's finished brewing. One cup at a time for up to twelve cups of 5-oz. You can use larger mugs, over six inches tall, by simply removing the drip tray and plate.

Twelve 5-oz cups is quite a lot of coffee grinds, right? So you'll want to keep an eye on how much you have left before you have to brew up again. A quirky looking gauge right above the coffee spout does that for you. At least, it's supposed to, and maybe it mostly does, but see below for more on that.

Of course, you don't always want your coffee straight away. It's nice to have it ready and waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. No problem. You can program this brewer to swing into action up to 24 hours in advance. And no worries about forgetting to switch it off either. You can set it to do just that at any time from immediately after the last brew, to four hours later. Your coffee stays hot for a while after that, so no excuses for cold coffee.

The DCC 3000 Coffee Maker even tells you when it's in need of a clean (how nice of it).

It extracts all the flavor by having a showerhead that distributes the water evenly over the coffee. Your program settings are preserved for up to a minute if there's a temporary loss of power for any reason. And here's a nice touch - when you're pouring your coffee a light comes on so you can see what you're doing.

How The Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker Works

Put simply, the DCC 3000 Coffee Maker brews coffee into a coffee reservoir for you to dispense whenever you want. The coffee reservoir is heated to 190 degrees (the optimum temperature for flavor extraction), so your coffee stays hot.

How long it stays hot for is up to you via the programming on the control panel. But it does this in such a way that there's no loss of flavor, for up to four hours. That should be enough for one, or even two, people for a whole afternoon. All right, for a couple of hours then, but no less.

It's easy to program it for a smaller quantity. Just press the "1-4" button on the control panel and place the lesser amount of grinds in the coffee reservoir.

The DCC 3000 uses a Gold-Tone Cuisinart Commercial-Style Filter. You can use a paper filter if you prefer (you'll need a #4 cone filter).

What About The Cleaning?

Keeping any coffee maker clean is so important that I've written a separate guide on it. Click here for "How To Clean A Coffee Maker".

The Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker needs particular care in keeping it clean. Apart from rinsing the permanent filter each day, rinse the basket it sits in. This may not seem dirty but it is susceptible to condensation. The coffee reservoir also needs an occasional rinse and regular emptying so it doesn't overflow on the next brew.

Several users have reported a problem with the coffee reservoir. There have been occasions when it has leaked, or overflowed, for no apparent reason. It seems that sometimes coffee grime gets under the gasket in the coffee reservoir valve, so the valve can't close fully.

You should be able to avoid any instance of this by carrying out a weekly cleaning routine. You can use coffee pot cleaner, though personally, I prefer a mixture of white vinegar and hot water. Swirl this around the coffee reservoir thoroughly while at the same time pressing the valve with your finger. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Other than that, a wipe of the exterior with a damp cloth is all that's required.

Pros and Cons of the Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker

Pros:

  • Dispenses one cup at a time with no capsules
  • Removable water and coffee reservoirs
  • Fully programmable up to 24 hours ahead
  • Charcoal water filter eliminates impurities from water supply
  • 1-4 cup setting for lower volume

Cons:

  • Coffee Gauge can be unreliable
  • Valve under coffee reservoir can get stuck if not cleaned regularly

This video is from Cuisinart themselves, so hardly objective, but it does take you through what it can do -

Consumer Ratings

What users of the Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker like most is how it provides instant hot coffee time after time. They like the freshness of their brew even when it's just spent a couple of hours in the coffee reservoir.

As of May 2019, the DCC 3000 has over 2,900 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of well over 4 stars.

Some users have mentioned that the gauge doesn't work properly, and it seems this is an issue on some models. But even for people who experience this problem, it's not a deal breaker. They just have to keep a rough tally of how much coffee they have left in the coffee reservoir.

The power cord can be rather difficult to pull out fully when you first unpack this brewer. However, it does extend to nearly 3 feet, which is long enough for any work top.

I've mentioned the coffee reservoir valve, which can get stuck if not cleaned regularly. However, a little white vinegar and water, and a few minutes a week are all you need to avoid this problem.

Summary

The Cuisinart DCC 3000 Coffee Maker is heavy duty and well made. The materials that it is constructed from and that come into contact with liquids are BPA free.

It produces hot, delicious coffee that can be kept hot for up to four hours or more without losing flavor. There's no carafe or capsules to bother with, and you can easily program it up to 24 hours ahead.

It's ideal for family use, and with the "1-4 cups" setting, it's also suitable for one or two people only. Cleaning is easy, with both reservoirs being easily removed.

Cuisinart is an established manufacturer of high-quality coffee makers. We at ChooseACoffeeMaker.com can recommend their DCC 3000 coffee maker.

What you're really buying with a coffee brewer like this is reliability and ease of use. You also want the peace of mind that comes from knowing the users of the brewer will have few complaints.

The BUNN 38700.0009 is not restricted to K-Cups or any similar capsules, unlike, for instance, the Keurig K3000SE. But, like the K3000SE, it is a true commercial brewer, plumbed into the main water supply.

It operates differently, though, having a water tank of 200 oz. (5.9 liters) capacity. This is because it decants the coffee into regular 64 oz. decanters or BUNN 1GPR one gallon coffee servers. Brewing at up to 7.5 gallons per hour it's not surprising that there are three decanter warmers built into it.

For which you need, of course, three decanters, so it's a pity that you have to purchase them separately. But on the other hand the price of them is less than $37, so it's not a deal-breaker. You can have one for decaf, and two different regular brews in the other two.

The Secret Weapon

BUNN's secret weapon with this commercial coffee brewer is in the electronics. First, the 38700.0009 can handle varying water pressures, and even water hardness, automatically. That's like guaranteeing a full flavor. This consistency theme is continued with their LCD display and the touchpad. These give you control over the brew level and the tank temperature. If there's a fault the LCD displays a diagnostic error code.

Naturally, you have pre-infusion for maximum flavor extraction. That's fully programmable. You can program the warmers to shut off automatically after a set period so your coffee doesn't overheat. And the tank temperature is allowed to fall when the brewer is not in use. Again, you have full control via the programming, and it's all good for your energy bill.

Three warmers - should be enough for any office

Further Controls

If you want to make soups or other hot beverages then there's a separate hot water faucet. And although the 38700.0009 makes just one pot at a time, and stops when each pot is brewed, you only have to press the Brew button again for the next pot.

When you're finished at the end of the day you just turn it off via the on/off switch at the back of the machine.

Consumer Ratings

There aren't many reviews of the BUNN 38700.0009 on Amazon - just 15 at the time of writing (May 2019). Probably most purchasers are business owners and don't have the time or inclination to write a review. But of those who have reviewed this brewer the consensus is that it delivers great tasting coffee. They've found it easy to use and clean, and the choice of brews is wide ranging. Together they've awarded an average score of well over four stars.

One reviewer found he couldn't get hot water to come out of the spout. This was probably more to do with the way the brewer had been plumbed into the water supply than with the brewer itself. Bear in mind that the BUNN 38700.0009 doesn't come ready to brew. It has to be connected to a separate water supply, and preferably to a separate power line as well.

You may need professional help with this, though YouTube can help in resolving most issues that occur.

In short, owners of this brewer are well satisfied with its performance.

Summary

The BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 commercial coffee brewer is a reliable workhorse that delivers to its users what they want without any undue fuss. It's not completely "set and forget", as you have to brew one carafe at a time. But with a generously sized tank and a high-volume brew capability, it's almost as hands-free as they come.

It's not tied to K-Cups or anything similar, so you have a wide choice of brews. Most importantly, it's extremely easy to use, and gives a high level of control to the user. It may not win any prizes for style or looks, but then who needs that for an office coffee maker?

So if you're looking for a rock-solid, reliable, coffee maker for your busy office or reception area then this brewer deserves careful consideration.

Keurig K3000SE Office Brewing System Review

"Our most advanced brewing system for large offices." That's how the Keurig K3000SE Coffee Brewing System is described by Keurig themselves.

A single cup coffee brewing system that is used by dozens, possibly hundreds, of people throughout the day has to be advanced. They all want different brews, in different strengths, with different flavors and in different amounts. And they don't want to have to go through a complex procedure to get it, either.

So, against this considerable challenge, how does the Keurig K3000SE coffee maker measure up?

Note: The Keurig K3000SE (formerly known as the B3000SE) is in limited supply. You may still be able to purchase it, but new Keurig K3000SEs are now rare. Used products are available, which is why this review has been left in place.

A Heavy Duty Office Machine

Keurig's K3000SE is designed and built for constant heavy use. The kind of use that only a large, busy office can provide. And if you've ever worked in such a place you'll know that people don't want to wait for their refreshment. They want it at the touch of no more than a couple of buttons.

They want an intuitive interface so they don't have to think unduly. So they can seamlessly carry on talking with their colleagues about the latest office management techniques and other gossip.

But they also want their exact choice of brew to taste good, and not have overtones of the previous brew. And they certainly don't want any interruptions for refilling the reservoir or anything else that could spoil their day.

Can the Keurig K3000SE handle all of that? Let's see. It has an LCD display that is simple to use (more on that below), and it has speed. It uses regular K-Cups (not "my K-Cups" as it's a commercial machine), so there's no messing with actual grinds. The capsules are auto-ejected and every 35 to 40 brews the display alerts you to empty the bin. If you need more storage you can add a platform that takes another 70 empty capsules.

The Coup de Grace

You're also alerted if you forget to put your cup on the drip tray or a K-Cup pod in place. And if you want hot water only there's a separate dispenser for it. You can easily rinse the internal works clean of any vestige of the hot chocolate brewed by the previous user.

And, finally, the coup de grace. The K3000SE is plumbed in to the main water supply. This does away with a reservoir and all its attendant cleaning and constant refilling. This coffee brewer can happily go on supplying coffee in all measures and from all kinds of K-Cup all day. Non-stop and without complaint or even much attention at all.

That seems to have the "heavy duty" box ticked.

Spoilt For Choice

Using the K-Cup capsules, the K 3000 SE can brew in sizes of 4-oz, 6-oz, 8-oz and 10-oz. The 4-oz is really for espressos or iced coffee. If you want a larger brew you can flip the drip tray and insert a mug of up to 20-oz.

As for blend and taste, you are restricted to K-Cups. However, in an office environment this matters less than at home. And you still enjoy a choice of K-Cups that extends to over 200 coffee and tea varieties. And a dozen or so of the top coffee and tea brands. If that's not enough, you can set the brewing temperature to between 187 and 192 degrees, according to your preference.

There's a separate hot water dispenser for when you need hot water for tea or some other beverage. You can get up to 10-oz at a time. It does make some noise when working, though only for a matter of seconds. Nothing that sounds out of place in a busy office.

There's one final level of choice. If you're the boss, paying for office refreshments out of your own pocket, you'll like this. You can connect the K3000SE to a vending machine so users have to pay for their drinks. This setup can take both US and Canadian currencies, and increases prices in 5-cent units.

Easy As LCD

An office machine like the Keurig K3000SE might be used by dozens of different people all the time. So it has to be simple to operate, and it is.

The four buttons below the LCD screen are used to select from the choices presented. The LCD readout is inter-active and intuitive, and key to the simplicity of operating the machine. Even the language can be selected on setup from English, French and Spanish.

Most users will just lift the brew handle, place their cup on the drip tray, put the K-Cup in place, close the handle, select their cup size and press the button.

It's not only for selecting your drink. The LCD display also provides diagnostic messages when something's wrong, such as if the capsule bin needs emptying. And, of course, if 60 seconds is a long time to you, you can check progress on the LCD screen.

Cleaning Up The Keurig K3000SE

Ease of cleaning is important in an office environment. As we've seen, there's no reservoir to clean. The outside of the K3000SE just needs a wipe with a damp cloth once in a while. The internal works should be regularly cleaned by running a measure of hot water only, and discarding it.

You can remove the drip tray very easily for cleaning. The filter should be replaced at least every six months. Descaling should be carried out regularly, using 80-oz of descaling solution. Some users simply do a regular brew with vinegar and water and find that works perfectly well.

As for servicing, if you regularly purchase your K-Cups from a dealer then he will probably be happy to service your machine free of charge. Worth checking out.

Consumer Ratings

Keurig is one of the leading coffee maker manufacturers and have been named the coffee maker "Brand of the Year" for all five years from 2012 to 2016 by the Harris Poll EquiTrend® Equity Study. You can read more about them in our review of the Keurig K45 here.

At the present time there are less than 50 reviews of the Keurig K3000SE coffee maker on Amazon. They give an average score in excess of 4 out of 5 stars, with over 70 per cent giving four or five stars.

Many reviewers love how it functions non-stop with hardly any attention required. That's largely down to having it plumbed in to the main water supply, and no reservoir to worry about.

The ease of use and lack of mess is also appreciated. The used capsules just fall into the bin by themselves at the end of the brew.

Some users complain that they don't seem to have all the parts they need to install it. That underlines the fact that you need a plumber to set up this coffee maker properly. The instructions also leave something to be desired, but if you employ a plumber then you won't need them.

All in all, most users of the Keurig K3000SE are very happy with their purchase.

Summary

The Keurig K3000SE is a heavy duty coffee maker for use in a busy office or reception area. It's not for domestic use unless you want another device plumbed into your domestic water supply.

It is easy to use, and cuts out the mess often associated with K-Cup machines. You really do need a plumber to set it up, but once that's done then maintenance is very easy.

So if you need to keep your workforce happy and/or impress commercial visitors, the Keurig K3000SE coffee maker is an extremely good choice.
