Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Review

The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker is a fully programmable coffee brewer for domestic use that delivers "coffee on demand". At least, that's what the main sales point is.

And it does this without using a carafe. Plus, it uses coffee grinds, not K-cups or other capsules, so it's much cheaper to operate.

It also boasts separate, removable water and coffee reservoirs that are easy to clean. And you can load the coffee reservoir with up to twelve 5-oz cups worth of grinds.

There's no deterioration of taste or temperature if you want just one to four cups. Just use the 1-4 cups setting on the control panel. Talking of taste, there's a charcoal filter that fits neatly into the water tank to filter out impurities.

So far so good. But does this popular coffee maker have any little secrets that you ought to know about?

What The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Does

It delivers piping hot coffee with no loss of flavor long after it's finished brewing. One cup at a time for up to twelve cups of 5-oz. You can use larger mugs, over six inches tall, by simply removing the drip tray and plate.

Twelve 5-oz cups is quite a lot of coffee grinds, right? So you'll want to keep an eye on how much you have left before you have to brew up again. A quirky looking gauge right above the coffee spout does that for you. At least, it's supposed to, and maybe it mostly does, but see below for more on that.

Of course, you don't always want your coffee straight away. It's nice to have it ready and waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. No problem. You can program this brewer to swing into action up to 24 hours in advance. And no worries about forgetting to switch it off either. You can set it to do just that at any time from immediately after the last brew, to four hours later. Your coffee stays hot for a while after that, so no excuses for cold coffee.

The DCC-3000 Coffee Maker even tells you when it's in need of a clean (how nice of it).

It extracts all the flavor by having a showerhead that distributes the water evenly over the coffee. Your program settings are preserved for up to a minute if there's a temporary loss of power for any reason. And here's a nice touch - when you're pouring your coffee a light comes on so you can see what you're doing.

How The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker Works

Put simply, the DCC-3000 Coffee Maker brews coffee into a coffee reservoir for you to dispense whenever you want. The coffee reservoir is heated to 190 degrees (the optimum temperature for flavor extraction), so your coffee stays hot.

How long it stays hot for is up to you via the programming on the control panel. But it does this in such a way that there's no loss of flavor, for up to four hours. That should be enough for one, or even two, people for a whole afternoon. All right, for a couple of hours then, but no less.

It's easy to program it for a smaller quantity. Just press the "1-4" button on the control panel and place the lesser amount of grinds in the coffee reservoir.

The DCC-3000 uses a Gold-Tone Cuisinart Commercial-Style Filter. You can use a paper filter if you prefer (you'll need a #4 cone filter).

What About The Cleaning?

Keeping any coffee maker clean is so important that I've written a separate guide on it. Click here for "How To Clean A Coffee Maker".

The Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker needs particular care in keeping it clean. Apart from rinsing the permanent filter each day, rinse the basket it sits in. This may not seem dirty but it is susceptible to condensation. The coffee reservoir also needs an occasional rinse and regular emptying so it doesn't overflow on the next brew.

Several users have reported a problem with the coffee reservoir. There have been occasions when it has leaked, or overflowed, for no apparent reason. It seems that sometimes coffee grime gets under the gasket in the coffee reservoir valve, so the valve can't close fully.

You should be able to avoid any instance of this by carrying out a weekly cleaning routine. You can use coffee pot cleaner, though personally, I prefer a mixture of white vinegar and hot water. Swirl this around the coffee reservoir thoroughly while at the same time pressing the valve with your finger. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Other than that, a wipe of the exterior with a damp cloth is all that's required.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Dispenses one cup at a time with no capsules
  • Removable water and coffee reservoirs
  • Fully programmable up to 24 hours ahead
  • Charcoal water filter eliminates impurities from water supply
  • 1-4 cup setting for lower volume

Cons:

  • Coffee Gauge can be unreliable
  • Valve under coffee reservoir can get stuck if not cleaned regularly

This video is from Cuisinart themselves, so hardly objective, but it does take you through what it can do -

Consumer Ratings

What users of the Cuisinart DCC-3000 Coffee Maker like most is how it provides instant hot coffee time after time. They like the freshness of their brew even when it's just spent a couple of hours in the coffee reservoir.

As of now, the DCC-3000 has over 2,300 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of well over 4 stars.

Some users have mentioned that the gauge doesn't work properly, and it seems this is an issue on some models. But even for people who experience this problem, it's not a deal breaker. They just have to keep a rough tally of how much coffee they have left in the coffee reservoir.

The power cord can be rather difficult to pull out fully when you first unpack this brewer. However, it does extend to nearly 3 feet, which is long enough for any work top.

I've mentioned the coffee reservoir valve, which can get stuck if not cleaned regularly. However, a little white vinegar and water, and a few minutes a week are all you need to avoid this problem.

BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 Review

Its full name may be a mouthful - the "BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 Automatic Commercial Coffee Brewer with 3 Warmers". It has to be plumbed into the main water supply, and it's dual voltage adaptable. On top of that, it's in the $500 plus price bracket.

Sounds like a true heavy-duty, commercial brewer so far, right? So let's take a close look at the BUNN 38700.0009 DV-3 and see if it really satisfies the requirements of a crowded workplace or busy reception area. Especially when it comes to what we're all interested in - ease of use and exceptionally good tasting coffee.

What You Get For Your Money

What you're really buying with a coffee brewer like this is reliability and ease of use. You also want the peace of mind that comes from knowing the users of the brewer will have few complaints.

The BUNN 38700.0009 is not restricted to K-Cups or any similar capsules, unlike, for instance, the Keurig B3000SE. But, like the B3000SE, it is a true commercial brewer, plumbed into the main water supply.

It operates differently, though, having a water tank of 200 oz. (5.9 liters) capacity. This is because it decants the coffee into regular 64 oz. decanters or BUNN 1GPR one gallon coffee servers. Brewing at up to 7.5 gallons per hour it's not surprizing that there are three decanter warmers built into it.

For which you need, of course, three decanters, so it's a pity that you have to purchase them separately. But on the other hand the price of them is less than $37, so it's not a deal-breaker. You can have one for decaf, and two different regular brews in the other two.

The Secret Weapon

BUNN's secret weapon with this brewer is in the electronics. First, the 38700.0009 can handle varying water pressures, and even water hardness, automatically. That's like guaranteeing a full flavor. This consistency theme is continued with their LCD display and the touchpad. These give you control over the brew level and the tank temperature. If there's a fault the LCD displays a diagnostic error code.

Naturally, you have pre-infusion for maximum flavor extraction. That's fully programmable. You can program the warmers to shut off automatically after a set period so your coffee doesn't overheat. And the tank temperature is allowed to fall when the brewer is not in use. Again, you have full control via the programming, and it's all good for your energy bill.

Further Controls

If you want to make soups or other hot beverages then there's a separate hot water faucet. And although the 38700.0009 makes just one pot at a time, and stops when each pot is brewed, you only have to press the Brew button again for the next pot.

When you're finished at the end of the day you just turn it off via the on/off switch at the back of the machine.

Consumer Ratings

There aren't many reviews of the BUNN 38700.0009 on Amazon - just 11 at the time of writing. Probably most purchasers are business owners and don't have the time or inclination to write a review. But of those who have reviewed this brewer the consensus is that it delivers great tasting coffee. They've found it easy to use and clean, and the choice of brews is wide ranging. Together they've awarded an average score of well over four stars.

One reviewer found he couldn't get hot water to come out of the spout. This was probably more to do with the way the brewer had been plumbed into the water supply than with the brewer itself. Bear in mind that the BUNN 38700.0009 doesn't come ready to brew. It has to be connected to a separate water supply, and preferably to a separate power line as well.

You may need professional help with this, though YouTube can help in resolving most issues that occur.

In short, owners of this brewer are well satisfied with its performance.

Summary

The BUNN 38700.0009 Axiom DV-3 commercial coffee brewer is a reliable workhorse that delivers to its users what they want without any undue fuss. It's not completely "set and forget", as you have to brew one carafe at a time. But with a generously sized tank and a high-volume brew capability, it's almost as hands-free as they come.

It's not tied to K-Cups or anything similar, so you have a wide choice of brews. Most importantly, it's extremely easy to use, and gives a high level of control to the user. It may not win any prizes for style or looks, but then who needs that for an office coffee maker?

So if you're looking for a rock-solid, reliable, coffee maker for your busy office or reception area then this brewer deserves careful consideration.

Keurig B3000SE Review

"Our most advanced brewing system for large offices." That's how the Keurig B3000SE Coffee Maker and Espresso Machine is described by Keurig themselves.

A coffee brewing system that is used by dozens, possibly hundreds, of people throughout the day has to be advanced. They all want different brews, in different strengths, with different flavors and in different amounts. And they don't want to have to go through a complex procedure to get it, either.

So, against this considerable challenge, how does the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker measure up?

A Heavy Duty Office Machine

Keurig's B3000SE is designed and built for constant heavy use. The kind of use that only a large, busy office can provide. And if you've ever worked in such a place you'll know that people don't want to wait for their refreshment. They want it at the touch of no more than a couple of buttons.

They want an intuitive interface so they don't have to think unduly. So they can seamlessly carry on talking with their colleagues about the latest office management techniques and other gossip.

But they also want their exact choice of brew to taste good, and not have overtones of the previous brew. And they certainly don't want any interruptions for refilling the reservoir or anything else that could spoil their day.

Can the Keurig B3000SE handle all of that? Let's see. It has an LCD display that is simple to use (more on that below), and it has speed. It uses regular K-Cups (not "my K-Cups" as it's a commercial machine), so there's no messing with actual grinds. The capsules are auto-ejected and every 35 to 40 brews the display alerts you to empty the bin. If you need more storage you can add a platform that takes another 70 empty capsules.

The Coup de Grace

You're also alerted if you forget to put your cup on the drip tray or a K-Cup pod in place. And if you want hot water only there's a separate dispenser for it. You can easily rinse the internal works clean of any vestige of the hot chocolate brewed by the previous user.

And, finally, the coup de grace. The B3000SE is plumbed in to the main water supply. This does away with a reservoir and all its attendant cleaning and constant refilling. This coffee brewer can happily go on supplying coffee in all measures and from all kinds of K-Cup all day. Non-stop and without complaint or even much attention at all.

That seems to have the "heavy duty" box ticked.

Spoilt For Choice

Using the K-Cup capsules, the B3000SE can brew in sizes of 4-oz, 6-oz, 8-oz and 10-oz. The 4-oz is really for espressos or iced coffee. If you want a larger brew you can flip the drip tray and insert a mug of up to 20-oz.

As for blend and taste, you are restricted to K-Cups. However, in an office environment this matters less than at home. And you still enjoy a choice of K-Cups that extends to over 200 coffee and tea varieties. And a dozen or so of the top coffee and tea brands. If that's not enough, you can set the brewing temperature to between 187 and 192 degrees, according to your preference.

There's a separate hot water dispenser for when you need hot water for tea or some other beverage. You can get up to 10-oz at a time. It does make some noise when working, though only for a matter of seconds. Nothing that sounds out of place in a busy office.

There's one final level of choice. If you're the boss, paying for office refreshments out of your own pocket, you'll like this. You can connect the B3000SE to a vending machine so users have to pay for their drinks. This setup can take both US and Canadian currencies, and increases prices in 5-cent units.

Keurig B3000SE review
Keurig B3000SE - another view

Easy As LCD

An office machine like the Keurig B3000SE might be used by dozens of different people all the time. So it has to be simple to operate, and it is.

The four buttons below the LCD screen are used to select from the choices presented. The LCD readout is inter-active and intuitive, and key to the simplicity of operating the machine. Even the language can be selected on setup from English, French and Spanish.

Most users will just lift the brew handle, place their cup on the drip tray, put the K-Cup in place, close the handle, select their cup size and press the button.

It's not only for selecting your drink. The LCD display also provides diagnostic messages when something's wrong, such as if the capsule bin needs emptying. And, of course, if 60 seconds is a long time to you, you can check progress on the LCD screen.

Cleaning Up The Keurig B3000SE

Ease of cleaning is important in an office environment. As we've seen, there's no reservoir to clean. The outside of the B3000SE just needs a wipe with a damp cloth once in a while. The internal works should be regularly cleaned by running a measure of hot water only, and discarding it.

You can remove the drip tray very easily for cleaning. The filter should be replaced at least every six months. Descaling should be carried out regularly, using 80-oz of descaling solution. Some users simply do a regular brew with vinegar and water and find that works perfectly well.

As for servicing, if you regularly purchase your K-Cups from a dealer then he will probably be happy to service your machine free of charge. Worth checking out.

Consumer Ratings

Keurig is one of the leading coffee maker manufacturers and have been named the coffee maker "Brand of the Year" for all five years from 2012 to 2016 by the Harris Poll EquiTrend® Equity Study. You can read more about them in our review of the Keurig K45 here.

At the present time there are less than 40 reviews of the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker on Amazon. They give an average score in excess of 4 out of 5 stars, with over 70 per cent giving four or five stars.

Many reviewers love how it functions non-stop with hardly any attention required. That's largely down to having it plumbed in to the main water supply, and no reservoir to worry about.

The ease of use and lack of mess is also appreciated. The used capsules just fall into the bin by themselves at the end of the brew.

Some users complain that they don't seem to have all the parts they need to install it. That underlines the fact that you need a plumber to set up this coffee maker properly. The instructions also leave something to be desired, but if you employ a plumber then you won't need them.

All in all, most users of the Keurig B3000SE are very happy with their purchase.

Summary

The Keurig B3000SE is a heavy duty coffee maker for use in a busy office or reception area. It's not for domestic use unless you want another device plumbed into your domestic water supply.

It is easy to use, and cuts out the mess often associated with K-Cup machines. You really do need a plumber to set it up, but once that's done then maintenance is very easy.

So if you need to keep your workforce happy and/or impress commercial visitors, the Keurig B3000SE coffee maker is an extremely good choice.

OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker Review

The OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker offers a completely different way to make coffee. It's made by a company that specializes in producing quality household utensils. And not just quality, but different. From dustpans and brushes to can openers to salad spinners to food compost bins (yes, me neither).

They say cold brewed coffee is for when you want a cold drink to cool down on a hot day. As coffee lovers know, there's no cold drink on earth that can beat a smooth, delicate coffee, served cold. Especially with ice.

They say it gives you extra smooth coffee without any bitterness, and that it can be served hot or cold.

And some say it gives you a complete change from your usual coffee experience. And without the mess often associated with brewing cold coffee.

So are "they" right? Does it deliver? Or are there drawbacks that outweigh the pleasures of cold brew? And is the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew coffee maker all it's cracked up to be?

What You Need To Know About Cold Brew

Many people over-complicate it, but, really, making cold brew is very simple. Especially in OXO's Good Grips cold brewer. You don't need hot water (or a power source). Only time. You heap your coarsely ground coffee beans into the top Brewing Container and put the perforated Rainmaker in place. You pour the water in a circular motion through the Rainmaker onto the grounds. Then stir it once or twice, but gently. You don't want the finer grains slipping through the filter to spoil the taste when you drink it.

After 12-24 hours you flip the Brew-Release switch, which allows the coffee to pour through the filter into the carafe. That takes between 20 minutes to an hour or more if you're making 12-14 cups, the maximum capacity.

You then mix it to taste, cup by cup, with cold or hot water, and milk if desired. You don't have to refrigerate it during the brew phase, but you can if you find it tastes better.

What you then have is coffee that is smoother than that which you get from a regular coffee maker. And, as cold water doesn't release the acidity that hot water often does, you have less bitterness as well.

There are health benefits too. If you have high cholesterol then you'll want to minimize the number of terpenes released from the coffee beans. They are released through contact with hot water, but less so with cold. Using a paper filter as well as the mesh helps ensure any that are released are excluded from your brew.

Cold brew is less acidic than traditionally brewed coffee - an especially important factor if you suffer from acid reflux. You also have around twice as much caffeine, thanks to the extended brew period. Hence the need to dilute it before drinking.

Ratio Of Grounds To Water

Without a cold brew coffee maker, things can get decidedly messy. Hence the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew. Of course, even this coffee maker can't guarantee that you'll be making perfect coffee every time. The quality of the water and the coffee grounds, and the ratio of grounds to water are important as well.

If you're new to cold brew it's best to follow the OXO recommendation, which is 10-oz of coffee grounds to 40-oz of water. You can change it later on if it suits you. When you mix the concentrate use an equal amount of hot or cold water and add milk to taste. You'll probably change this ratio too, once you know your preferences. If you're also adding ice then remember that when it melts it will add to the total amount of water. Some people add ice only, and then wait for it to melt.

All this may be more of a hassle than most other ways of making coffee, but the result is sheer coffee heaven.

Build Quality Of The OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Most components of the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker are of a solid, strong plastic. It has a stainless steel mesh filter that is removable for rinsing under the tap. The carafe is made of borosilicate glass and is the only weak point of the whole coffee maker.

Some users have found this breaks too easily, though, in fairness, some have put unreasonable pressure on it. One actually lifted it up, full, by the plastic lid, which would probably have been too much for any carafe. OXO do, however, provide an unlimited Guarantee for this machine, and, seemingly, stand by it, so kudos to OXO.

A few paper filters are provided for those who are happier having an extra layer of filtration. Some users find they need one to catch any fine grounds that would otherwise get through.

This product works very efficiently, but you do have to observe a few rules. Do make sure that all the parts have slotted together properly before pouring your water into the top Brewing Container. Otherwise, you may get a leak of the type some reviewers have complained about.

In addition, the Brew-Release switch must be firmly in one position or another - either up or down. You can't just flick it with your finger, as some reviewers speak of doing. Slide it down firmly to start the brew, and firmly back up when it's finished.

The design of the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker is good. It's not too tall to slide under your wall cabinets on the kitchen counter. You may have to slide it out, though, to fill the top Brewing Container. The whole product can be neatly dismantled, stacked and stored away while not in use.

Cleaning The OXO Good Grips Cold Brew

Cleaning the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker is very important - more so than for most coffee makers. In particular, the stainless steel mesh filter needs regular attention. It's a very fine mesh, and it has to let the liquid coffee through while blocking all the grounds. Even coarse grounds have fine particles in them.

So help it do its job. Most users who say they have trouble with grinds blocking up the filter simply haven't been cleaning it after use. Every coffee lover has to know how to clean a coffee maker. Wash it in hot water and liquid detergent, and give it a good rinse. That will take care of any coffee oils that would otherwise remain on the surface, as well as leftover grinds.

How Easy Is It To Use?

This Cold Brew Coffee Maker makes what would otherwise be a messy job extremely easy and clean. As I've mentioned, you do need to exercise some care with the Brewing Container and Brew-Release switch.

You can use one of the paper filters supplied if any fine grinds are getting through the mesh filter. Most users, however, find them unnecessary and praise the ease of use of this cold brew coffee maker.

OXO Good Grips Cold Brew review
The Top Brewing Container

Does It Taste Good?

Ah - the most important question. Don't forget - you have 10-14 days to drink your coffee, and that's if it's been kept sealed in a refrigerator. That's after you've waited 12-24 hours for it to brew, and then another hour or so for it to filter.

So after all that it had better taste good, right? Well, if you've ever tasted cold brew coffee you'll know that it can taste better than anything else on earth. Even, arguably, if you've used pre-ground. You can vary the brewing time and the ratios of grounds and concentrate to water. You can dilute the concentrate with hot or cold water, and add milk and/or other infusions. For sweetening it's best to use syrup or some other sweetener as sugar doesn't dissolve easily in cold coffee.

Some people just put ice in it and let it melt, so they can enjoy a deliciously super-cold drink.

The OXO Good Grips Cold Brew coffee maker enjoys an average score of well over 4 stars from over 570 Amazon reviewers, at the time of writing. Around two-thirds have given it the full five stars.

Most users love how easy it is to use, removing, as it does, all the mess from the brewing process. Its versatility is also praised. As well as making coffee of all strengths, it can make tea.

Some reviewers have had problems with the filter becoming clogged up, but I have dealt with that earlier. As well as regular cleaning (which is very easy to do) you need to "stir gently" and treat with care.

And the taste of the coffee produced is almost universally loved.

And, most important, one that can give a little home comfort when you're camped out in all weathers in the bush, the mountains or the forest, a hundred miles or more from the nearest power outlet.

How Exactly Does This AC-Free Coffee Maker Work?

The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is designed to be heated on a Coleman two- or three-burner camping stove. In fact, most camp stove burners are suitable, provided the heat produced isn't excessive. (That's where some campers have slipped up, and we talk about that below.)

If you forget about the power supply for a moment, you can consider this product as a normal drip coffee maker. It has a solid steel base, where the flame heats the water container, a filter basket that swings out, and a decanter that doesn't drip. It uses a standard basket type paper filter, though it can take a permanent filter if you prefer.

You can fill the water reservoir with enough water to make ten 6-oz cups. A full tank takes little more than 10 minutes to brew depending on ambient temperature. When the water boils it moves through the filter and into the glass decanter.

If you just have to pour your cup before the entire pot has brewed then you can utilize the Pause ‘N Serve facility. This lets you interrupt the brewing process while you pour off your cup - with no mess.

So you have all the home comforts of your regular drip coffee maker. You know - the one that you have at home plugged into an electrical socket. And it's right there with you in the middle of nowhere.

How Is The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker For Build Quality

As any camper knows, it can be pretty scary when you're facing nature with little more than what you've got in the back of your SUV. So the things you rely on have to be, well, reliable. And they can't be allowed to break easily.

So it may be a little disconcerting, setting up camp, to read the label on the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker box. It says, "Made in China".

But hold on. The Chinese may have been a little lax on quality control in the past, but times are a-changing. Certainly, companies such as Coleman that have a reputation for high quality don't compromise it when they manufacture in China. They've actually been instrumental in raising standards in Chinese factories. And the decanter, as a matter of interest, is made in Germany.

Handling this coffee maker gives a feel of rugged dependability. It's true there are some plastic parts to it. But all the parts that are liable to feel the burner flame are of steel.

What's So Special About The Coleman?

The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker looks different from your archetypal coffee maker. And it's not just because it doesn't have a power cord hanging out of the back. It's probably because Coleman isn't usually associated with coffee makers. The company makes all kinds of camping and other equipment designed to make the outdoor life easier.

That really is what's so special about the Coleman. It's easy to use, even outdoors without all the facilities that we take for granted at home. Its ability to remove all the grounds from your coffee ensures superiority over a percolator, once the favorite of campers.

Is The Coffee Any Good?

You might think that a coffee maker made for camping would be primitive and incapable of producing delicious coffee. Not so. The method used ensures that the brew is done well, with no grounds escaping the filter. And you don't have to be an expert on how to make good coffee.

The coffee from the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is widely regarded by most of its reviewers on Amazon as excellent. There are one or two things you have to be careful of, though, as outlined below.

Consumer Ratings

At the present time over two-thirds of all reviewers of this product on Amazon award the full five stars. With over 550 reviews of it, that's a considerable achievement. Most users quite obviously love it.

Many reviewers have mentioned a specific problem they've had with the Coleman, that of overflowing. There are one or two rules you have to comply with to prevent this.

First, you should make sure your Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is level. In camping conditions on rough terrain, this may not be easy, but it's important.

Secondly, you have to insert your coffee grinds into the basket and swing it closed before you put the coffee pot in place. The pot should be pushed fully into place, with the handle precisely centered. It has to activate the lever that regulates the drip and the Pause 'N' Serve functions.

Make sure the lever is up to the max (which it can't be if the swing basket is still open). Also, you have to remove the little plastic stopper in the bottom of the grounds holder. All this becomes second nature after a couple of brews and ensures a trouble-free brew every time.

Summary

The Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is a hit with nearly all its users. It does have a few idiosyncrasies but once you've mastered the art of using it you're good to go.

It's ideal if you can use this with the Coleman two- or three-burner camping stove, but that's quite optional.

If you love camping and coffee without the grinds in the cup then the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker is for you.

Hamilton Beach 46205 Coffee Maker Review

The Hamilton Beach 46205 coffee maker is a relative newcomer to the marketplace. The company is evidently anxious to prove that it can still produce desirable, quality products at an economy price.

This coffee maker, under $50 at the time of writing, certainly looks stunning. It has a stainless steel and dark plastic finish, a digital readout, push button controls and a generously sized carafe.

So is it worth considering for your next coffee maker? Or does it have some downsides that you ought to know about?

Is The Hamilton Beach 46205 Easy To Use?

The short answer is yes. Hamilton Beach has gone well out of its way here. Let's start with the water reservoir. You can fill this using the carafe or other container, or you can remove it to fill from the tap. And the top lid opens wide, so there's no danger of missing the target. The whole coffee maker swivels around on little casters to make re-positioning effortless. You have to marvel at the brilliance of the design.

Next is putting your grinds in place. I really like this feature. There's a button on the side that you press to make the upper part of the front swing out. Behind it is revealed the little basket holder and filter to put your grinds into. Very neat. If you keep your coffee maker under a wall cabinet with little space above, this feature will be very useful.

The Control Panel has just six buttons, but you use them in combination to program the coffee maker. You can control the heat level of the warming plate, and the strength of the brew. You can set the time displayed and pre-program for specific on and off times.

The warming plate is non-stick and the spout of the carafe is non-drip. As the full name implies, the water reservoir holds enough water to make 12-cups. But if you want less, just choose the "1-4 Cup" selection. The other two options are Bold and Regular, giving you fingertip control over the strength of your brew.

And there's a really useful "Auto Pause and Serve" feature. This lets you pause the brew in order to pour a cup for yourself, with no spillage. So no mess to clean up. The brew then continues as if nothing had happened, a feature more often found in more expensive machines.

Removing the decanter

Does This Mean The Coffee Tastes Good?

Having a coffee maker that's easy to use is all very well, but it's not so good if the coffee tastes like dishwater. Fortunately, that's not the case with the Hamilton Beach 46205.

A little trial and error is usually necessary before you get things right. But you'll soon discover the right settings for you. If you only want a small amount of coffee you'll select the "1-4 Cup". After that, it's just a question of Bold or Regular, and that depends on the coffee grinds you use and your palate.

The warming plate will keep the coffee in the carafe warm for up to two hours. Exactly how warm can be set by you on the Control Panel.

This machine makes coffee as strong as you like, or just regular if that's what you prefer. And it makes it hot, which is what we all like, I'm sure.

Filling the water reservoir

Oh Yes, The Cleaning

It's a fact of life that everyone who owns one needs to know how to clean a coffee maker. And they need to do it too. So how does the Hamilton Beach 46205 measure up for ease of cleaning?

Overall, it measures up very well. We've covered how easy it is to remove the water reservoir (just lift it an inch and a half and then slide it to the rear). That can be rinsed under the tap.

If you have a permanent filter then that can be rinsed as well, as can the carafe. The lid of the water reservoir can just be given a wipe with a clean rag.

Once a month or so, according to how much use it gets, you should clean more thoroughly, using white vinegar.

Who Is The Hamilton Beach 46205 Made For?

This is a 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker in steel and black. It would suit a family of four or six or an office of ten or twelve people. Just two people living together would find the "1-4 cups" setting useful.

It would probably not be suitable for larger numbers of people or a busy environment, such as a reception area. In such a case you'd have to spend a little more than $40 - $50.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Swivel brew basket enables you to fill your grinds from the front
  • Easily maneuverable with little casters on the bottom
  • Fill water reservoir from carafe or tap
  • Fast and quiet

Cons:

  • Taller than most coffee makers, so space under wall cabinets may be a problem
  • Difficult to empty carafe completely owing to lip around the top
  • Some units have a smokey colored reservoir, making it difficult to see the water level

At the present time, I've been unable to find a suitable video guide to the Hamilton Beach 46205. As soon as I've found one I'll post a link to it here.

Consumer Ratings

The Hamilton Beach 46205 is hugely loved by many owners. On Amazon at the time of writing around three-quarters of reviewers have awarded the full five stars. The most popular feature is probably the removable water reservoir, followed by the swiveling brew basket. The way you can move the coffee maker around on a kitchen counter using the little castors is also appreciated.

One or two people have found that the temperature settings on the warmer plate were rather high. Others don't like the smokey glass of the water reservoir as they can't see the water level. But these are comparatively minor issues and other users haven't found any problems with these things.

Summary

The Hamilton Beach 46205 must be one of the most value-for-money coffee makers available. Most reviewers love it, and for all kinds of different reasons, from the hot and flavorsome coffee it produces to the quietness and speed, and general ease of use.

It has a small footprint, though a trifle taller than most, and it just looks great on any kitchen counter. It's reliable, from an established manufacturer of coffee makers, and it produces great tasting coffee. What's not to like? Check out the latest price on Amazon now.

Frieling USA French Press Coffee Maker Review

The Frieling USA French Press coffee maker comes in five sizes and four finishes. You have sizes of 8-oz, 17-oz, 23-oz, 36-oz and 44-oz, and finishes of standard brushed, standard polished, frustration-free brushed and frustration-free polished.

They are all basically the same machine and for that reason this review doesn't contain much further reference to the differing sizes and finishes available.

Taken together, they won the 2017 Housewares Design Award. French presses overall have an excellent reputation. Sounds good so far. Let's take a close look at these particular French Presses and see what we find.

Design and Build Quality

The Frieling USA French Press is simple in design and has a sturdy build quality. When you handle it for the first time it just feels unbreakable. Nothing can even scratch it - not even a fall from the kitchen counter top. It's hard to believe it's made in China.

Everything is solid, if a little heavy. The lid and plunger - items that are often flimsy on cheaper presses - feel tough and durable. They won't be breaking in a hurry. And the handle is large enough for any hand, and stable, yet elegant as well.

What about when it's in work mode? The plunger is quite unique, and I cover that separately below. The other main function of any French Press is to keep the coffee at the optimum brewing temperature. That's 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. And to keep it there until at least the end of the steeping process.

The Frieling USA French Press, made entirely of stainless steel, does that with the aid of a double wall. The coffee stays hot for much longer than if it were in a glass press. Four times as long, according to Frieling. But, as I explain below, it's best in practice to pour out the entire contents after no more than 3-5 minutes.

Good Coffee?

The Frieling USA French Press produces fresh, delicious coffee as long as you observe a few guidelines. But you don't have to be an expert on how to use a coffee maker to use this French Press successfully. As with any coffee brewer, you get the best results if you can grind your beans immediately before brewing.

There's a danger that second and later servings will be too strong, as the grounds are left in the coffee. To avoid this, decant all the coffee into cups or a pre-heated carafe after 3-5 minutes, according to your preference.

All French Presses produce less sediment in the bottom of your cup if you use a coarse grind. Frieling claim that their "dual filtration system" catches all the grounds, but this may be a trifle optimistic. Some invariably get through from a fine grind, but the superior taste of the coffee makes you forget all that.

Cold brews in hot weather are delicious, and the Frieling USA French Press handles them very easily. Just pour in cold water, rather than hot, keep it refrigerated for 24 hours, and then press the plunger. Talking of the plunger...

Taking The Plunge

The plunger - the key working component of a French Press - has a unique "dual filtration system". It consists of a pre-filter and a second screen to ensure that no sediment gets into your cup. They are kept in place with a spring loaded ring.

It's a very simple design, but very effective. Some users have experienced a scratching sound when pressing down. That's not a fault - just a result of the tight fitting of the filter assembly, and completely harmless.

The plunger on the Frieling USA French Press is probably the most robust and efficient of any.

Cleaning The Frieling USA French Press

The Frieling is probably the easiest coffee maker of any type to clean. There aren't any complex mechanisms into which coffee grinds can find their way. Being made of stainless steel, most parts can simply be rinsed under the tap, or placed in the dish washer.

Everything is easily disassembled and reassembled. The plunger parts rinse easily and the whole lot can be dried off with a paper towel. And that's about it, as far as the cleaning is concerned.

At the time of writing the Frieling USA French Press has been reviewed nearly 1,690 times on Amazon. It has an average score of over 4.5 - amazing, considering the number of reviewers. Over four in five reviewers have left a score of the full five stars.

Reviews are full of references to its solid build quality, stylish good looks, and value for money. Many reviewers have owned and used their Frieling daily for years. Also appreciated are its ease of use and cleaning.

It's difficult to find anything much that's negative. One or two reviewers have noted that the coffee acquires a bitter taste after a while in the French Press. But bear in mind, as mentioned above, that the machine is not meant to be used as a thermos flask.

Hario Technica 5-Cup Coffee Syphon Review

The Hario Technica 5-Cup Coffee Syphon is "beautifully crafted for an expert cup of coffee". So say Hario themselves, who describe themselves as "the brand recognized by Coffee Geeks worldwide".

Two bold claims, backed up by images of a coffee maker unlike any you've seen before (unless you're a "coffee geek"). But can these claims stand up to scrutiny?

The Hario Technica Is So Different

It would be impossible for a company like Hario to produce a run-of-the-mill product. They just don't do it. One look at the Hario Technica 5-Cup Coffee Syphon proves that.

It looks rather like a piece of laboratory equipment, which isn't surprising. Hario have been producing laboratory glass since 1921, and specialize in heatproof glass.

The Technica is a vacuum coffee brewer that gives you total control of the brewing process from beginning to end. It's not for those who just want to press a few buttons and sit back while their coffee is prepared. And it's not for when you're in a hurry, grabbing a quick cup of coffee before rushing out to work.

It's for when you have some me-time. For when you have some friends round that you want to impress (it's a ready-made topic of conversation). For when you just want to take it easy, read a book, and spend some time adjusting your brew. Because the Technica takes its time. So is the brew it can produce worth waiting for? We'll take a look at the reviews presently to find out what people think about that.

What Does It Actually Consist Of?

Two glass bowls that clip together, a mechanism to hold them in place, a glass syphon and an alcohol heater. The two bowls are made of heat resistant borosilicate glass. There's a top lid, of plastic, that doubles as a stand on which to place the coffee container. And there's a cloth filter attached to the strainer. You also have a plastic measuring/stirring spoon.

And it just looks so good, standing there on the kitchen work top. It may not have any touch-screens or digital readouts, but it has class. The quality of build oozes out. It's sturdy, and can take any punishment you may care to dish out.

The bottom bowl that contains the freshly brewed coffee holds 600 ml - enough for three US cups. The height of it above the horseshoe stand where the burner goes is about 10 cm. It's by no means a large appliance, but it has unbounded potential.

The Upper Glass Bowl

Customizing Your Hario Technica

One of the things I love about this coffee maker is how customizable it is. The first way in which many users change it is to replace the alcohol burner for a butane burner.

The alcohol burner that comes with this machine is rather slow. The alcohol burns cooler, and the mechanism supplied cannot be finely adjusted. You could, of course, simply pre-heat your water and bring it to the boil with the alcohol burner. But with a butane burner it's even quicker, and you can have your pre-heated water boiling in less than a minute. Plus the strength of the flame can be easily fine-tuned to your needs.

At the present time a butane burner for syphon coffee makers is available on Amazon for less than $50.

Many users also change the cloth filter. You can purchase packs of cloth filters fairly cheaply, and you can also wash them for repeat usage. Even so, you may prefer to use a metal filter for ease of cleaning, and which works just as well. Alternatively, you could use paper filters, though you'll need a different filter holder.

Customizing Your Coffee

If you really want to experience the full range of what this coffee brewer can produce then you need your own bean grinder. And a good one at that. No other way round it, I'm afraid. By experimentation you can discover what your preferences are.

You can produce a weak or strong brew, or anything in between. For those new to coffee brewing, hot water filters through a coarse grind quickly and results in a weak brew. With a fine grind it takes longer, and extracts more flavor, resulting in a stronger brew.

The type of filter you use also has an effect on the taste of your coffee. And the roast of your beans makes yet another difference. Then there's the amount of water you start off with. And the ratio of water to coffee grinds. You can spend hours, and dozens of coffee drinking sessions, using different permutations to discover what you like best. A tough job, but, hey, it's just got to be done, right?

Oh, and did I mention? - you can also make tea with it. Shhhhh!

hario technica
The Stand

What About The Plastic Components?

I've mentioned that there are a few plastic components in the Hario Technica. In particular the top lid and the mechanism that joins the two glass bowls are plastic.

However, neither the water nor the coffee grinds come into contact with either of these items at any stage. When the water boils in the lower bowl it transfers to the grinds in the upper bowl via a glass tube. At that stage you should be lifting the lid at the top so you can stir the brew. But even if you didn't, the water wouldn't reach the lid unless you had seriously over-filled the lower bowl.

There is a plastic spoon supplied as part of the kit, but you can always use a metal spoon instead.

Is Cleaning A Problem?

Cleaning the Hario Technica is very easy, as long as you're not in too much of a hurry. Even when the coffee appears to have filtered fully through there may still be a vacuum holding the bowls together. Just wait another minute or so and then they will be easy to separate and clean.

If you then remove the filter carefully you can dispose of the grounds easily. Then, if you use the original cloth or a metal filter, it's just a question of rinsing it.

The glass components are dish-washer safe, though personally I would always hand wash them.

Consumer Ratings for the Hario Technica

Coffee maker reviews can contain some very damning criticism, much of it unjustified. Fortunately, this coffee brewer has escaped any such misfortune so far. At the time of writing, the Hario Technica has only been available long enough to have just over 100 reviews on Amazon. It has an average score of about as close to 5 as you could hope for from that number of reviewers.

One reviewer after another praises the smoothness and sheer good taste of the coffee this machine produces. The quality and strength of the Technica are also rated very highly.

Many users have discarded the alcohol burner supplied and gone for a butane burner, which speeds the brewing process considerably. Others have taken to using a metal or paper filters. Nevertheless, nearly all these reviewers have still left a five star score. This says much for the overall quality of the Hario Technica, as well as how it endears itself to its owners.

Summary

The Hario Technica 5-Cup Coffee Syphon is tremendously popular among its owners. As well as being the centerpiece of conversation at any social gathering, it produces coffeehouse quality coffee.

For no more than you could easily pay for a dull, inferior coffee maker, you can purchase the Technica, a butane burner and a metal filter, and have endless fun experimenting until you have your perfect brew. And have your friends talking about it for a long time after.

And it's so different. We think you'll love this eccentric coffee maker, and have no hesitation in giving it our highest recommendation.

Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker Review

The Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker is unique. There are no other coffee brewers anywhere like it. What makes it unique? Well, before we get into the down and dirty, let me tell you this. When it was introduced into the marketplace the first 30 plus reviews of it on Amazon.com all gave it the full five stars.

I doubt there are any other coffee makers, and probably any other kitchen appliances of any kind, that can boast that. So let's take a look at its other unique characteristics.

What's So Different About The Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker?

Where's best to start? Maybe with the way it looks when you set it up on your kitchen worktop. It has a sleek, attractive design, with a blue lit LCD display prominent on the Control Panel, above the buttons. This shows the time, and also displays the settings you've selected.

The buttons themselves, on the stainless steel facade, are large and encircled by rings that light up blue when activated. They are matched by the water reservoir to the right, which is illuminated in blue when the machine is brewing. And the water level indicator also lights up in blue for easy reading. You don't come across that very often, even in machines costing several times the price.

Below the Control Panel sits the glass carafe, which is included in the price. This has markings to show cup levels and holds 1.8 liters, enough for about twelve cups, or six large mugs. It sits on a hot plate, about which more below.

The space in which the carafe goes is neatly designed so as to minimize heat loss. All this helps ensure that your coffee is not only piping hot immediately after brewing, but stays hot for longer.

Lifting the top of the coffee maker reveals the permanent filter, easily removed for rinsing clean. Not unique, perhaps, but still a welcome money-saving feature. Also removable is the filter basket, which is double-walled so as to better retain the aroma of your coffee.

All of this in a unit only thirteen and a half inches tall, and less than nine inches deep and wide. That itself is one of the things that makes this coffee maker so popular with its owners.

Programmable Automation

Having only five buttons, including the on/off button, the Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker is nevertheless programmable to make life easy. Pressing the Auto button, on the far right, sets it to brew a full carafe. This will take no more than about 10 minutes.

If you want less, then press the 1-4 Cup button instead. Five beeps indicate that the brew is complete, and the machine then switches mode to heat the carafe. This it will do for up to two hours, before switching off. Well, who wants coffee that's been brewed more than two hours?

What if you want your hot coffee waiting for you when you awake in the morning? That's easy. Just press the Pgm button and follow the intuitive on-screen instructions. You can program in this way for up to 24 hours in advance.

And you can always interrupt the brewing process if you just can't wait any longer for your coffee. The "pause and pour" option lets you remove the carafe mid-brew to fill your cup. The coffee stops pouring so there's no mess to clear up, and resumes when you replace the carafe.

Value For Money?

At the present time, the Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker is well below the $70 mark on Amazon. It is not only a programmable, automatic machine that can produce from one to twelve cups very quickly. It also produces fine tasting coffee in no more than 10 minutes for 12 cups.

Included in the whole package are the glass carafe and the permanent filter, as well as a useful measuring spoon.

So, value for money? I'd say it scores very heavily on this.

Consumer Ratings

To say the Haier 12-Cup Digital Thermal Coffee Maker is popular with its users is an understatement. I've already mentioned its early 100 per cent five star ratings. Currently, it's average score is over 4.5 from over 80 reviewers.

Among the most popular features is the simple set-up. Apart from setting the time on the clock, all you really have to do is to give it a clean. You don't even really have to know how to use a coffee maker. The speed of brew and the stylish looks are also well appreciated.

The only real complaint from users relates to the size of the opening into which you pour your water prior to brewing. This is rather small, and sometimes when barely awake in the early morning you may find this a little tricky. However, most users don't seem to have much of a problem here.

Summary

The Haier 12-Cup Coffee Maker is sturdily built of quality materials and should last for many years with average use. It's extremely simple to use, and versatile enough for almost any home situation, from one person to a large family.

There's hardly anything not to like (including the price). It looks great on any kitchen worktop, and its black plastic and stainless steel exterior will blend with your existing decor. Overall, this is a lovely coffee brewer and we are sure you will not be disappointed in your purchase.

Keurig K145 OfficePRO Brewing System Review

The Keurig K145 OfficePRO Brewing System, as the name implies, is a commercial coffee maker intended for use in an office environment. You can only purchase either direct from Keurig or from an authorized distributor such as Amazon.

Yet plainly many people opt to have this as their domestic coffee maker. There must be a reason, or maybe several reasons. Let's take a close look at the K145 and find out why, and if this confidence is justified.

What You Get For Your Money

The Keurig K145 OfficePRO is a single serve machine, brewing one cup at a time. You have three sizes to choose from - 6, 8, and 10-oz. You make your selection by way of a chunky knob that sits on the top, rather than the traditional push-buttons.

It's designed to be switched on at the start of the working day and off at the end. If no-one switches it off then, as long as the auto-off feature has been activated, it switches itself off after two hours of non-use.

Being always on, it brews your cup of coffee in less than a minute. You can choose what you want from over 500 varieties of tea, hot cocoa, or an iced beverage. Anything that is covered by the K-Cup system, and that includes 75 well-known brands. And since this machine is not part of the Keurig 2.0 technology, you're not restricted to 2.0 pods.

You also have a 48-oz water reservoir with a removable lid, and that is itself easily removed. So re-filling, or just topping up, is easy. You can remove the drip tray when you want to fill a travel mug that otherwise would be too tall for the machine. And you can dispense hot water, eg for a cup of tea, by pressing the brew button without inserting a K-Cup.

Finally - and if you're new to Keurig coffee makers this will be very helpful - you get a bonus. A variety pack of 12 K-Cup pods.

Why Are Some Of The Components Of The K145 Heavy Duty?

The Keurig K145 OfficePRO has a water tank that holds enough for four or five cups. Its typical use is meant to be in an office of up to 15 people. It is going to be in regular use throughout the day, day after day. So if there are any weaknesses they are going to show up quickly.

A common weakness of coffee makers is the pump. If this gives out, the machine has to be scrapped. For that reason, Keurig have given this machine a heavy-duty pump system. This is what their home models used to have before they introduced "Quiet Brew Technology".

The power cord is also heavy duty. This machine often operates in an environment where several other high-powered machines are powered on the same circuit. Possibly it's overkill, but better safe than sorry, especially where electricity is concerned.

If It's A Commercial Brewer, Why Do So Many People Use It At Home?

Good question. It may be helpful here to look at another very popular Keurig coffee maker - the Keurig K45. You can read our review of this machine by clicking here (opens in a new tab).

As you can see, the K45 is very similar to the K145. It has the same size of water reservoir, and the same auto-off feature (with the same 2-hour period). It has the same sizes of brew and is equally fast, brewing in 30 to 60-seconds when switched on. And the drip-tray makes way for a travel mug when you want.

But the Keurig K145 OfficePRO has more. And I'm not just talking about the heavy duty components and the chrome and silver trim. It has a brew/drain switch at the rear, and a drain button which expels all the water from the inner tank. You don't even have to move the machine. Very useful if you want to pack up for removal or storage.

Heavy duty, though, is often the clincher. The K45 has a quieter pump that lacks the strength and toughness of that in the K145. With the prices being not that dissimilar, it's no wonder that many coffee lovers have opted for the K145. The price of a tougher, longer-lasting pump may be a little more noise, but it's a price many people feel is worth paying.

Consumer Ratings

Most popular among reviewers of the Keurig K145 OfficePRO is the huge choice of brands and flavors of K-Cups available. If you use filtered water then cleaning is, for the most part, very easy. A warning light shows when you should clean with a de-scaler. It helps to clean a coffee maker with vinegar every six months or so, as well.

There's much to be said for a coffee maker that brews your coffee in a minute, with little preparation required. And that can brew a variety of different drinks without the taste of the previous brew migrating into your own.

Some users have commented that if you use the 10-oz cup size the coffee is weaker. The answer seems to be to use a dark roast, which will give you a fuller flavor.

Others don't like the level of noise produced by the pump (though most users have no problem with this). I've covered this earlier, but here's a tip. If you find the noise tiresome, place your machine on a folded towel or half inch thick sheet of foam. That should reduce the sound level by more than half.

The K145 enjoys an average rating on Amazon of well over 4 at the present time, from over 870 reviewers. Nearly four fifths give 4 or 5 stars.

Summary

The Keurig K145 OfficePRO is a heavy duty coffee maker that is fast and easy to use. It's built to be strong enough to cater for a small office of fifteen or so people. Its pump, the Achilles Heel of many coffee makers, is of industrial strength.

The quality and variety of brews it can produce is undeniable. It's backed by a one-year warranty and Keurig's well-known customer care.

It is probably advisable to purchase, if not from Keurig direct, from an authorized distributor (such as Amazon). This is to ensure you get everything you're paying for.
